PLANS are forming for Melksham to make a ‘golden’ comeback in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition.
The town was awarded gold for four consecutive years between 2018 and 2021 but has not entered the competition – now in its 60th year – for the past two years because of a decline in volunteers to help with tasks such as watering, planting and maintaining floral displays. But now the Melksham in Bloom team are back with big plans – and with new volunteers recruited at a public meeting, held at the town hall last month.
Organiser of the Bloom team, Terri Welch said, “Bloomers and the town council team are clearing overgrown foliage, so that the bulbs can be seen and are planning the colour scheme for this year. We have just started but a lot is happening; and we all look forward to entering Melksham in Britain in Bloom again.”
Members of the Bloom team are also making flags to decorate the town as part of the competition. Terri said, “The flag team has some lovely new members and already the theme for this summer is agreed and a start has been made on the flags. Something very different will be on display.
“Yarn bombing also showcases people’s skills with knitting and crochet. In the past we have all appreciated the poppies for Remembrance and the lovely post box toppers that appear. A group of these skilled people are getting together and are preparing to bomb our town with their art.”
To further help Melksham, Terri said the town council is planting trees. “Many of the present trees are fully mature and need to be gradually replaced in our street scene. This helps with air quality and we all benefit,” explains Terri.
Britain in Bloom is a national gardening competition inspiring community groups in towns, cities and villages to make positive changes to their local environment through horticultural, environmental and community action.
