The Bowerhill Residents Action Group (BRAG) picnic area has won its  third consecutive Level 5 Outstanding award at the South West In Bloom  presentation day.

Mike Mills, Chairman of BRAG said, “In 2014 we entered the picnic area into the ‘It’s  Your Neighbourhood’ category of South West In Bloom for the first time and won a Level 5 Outstanding Award. In 2015 we entered again, and again won the top award and now in 2016 we have made it a hat trick of  successes. Congratulations to all the members of BRAG who work at the picnic area keeping it in top condition. This award is for all of you.”

  • Melksham woman cycles length of Britain in memory of grandma

A Melksham woman has completed a 1,000-mile solo cycle across Britain in memory of her grandma Cheryl Decarteret who died following a collision in the town centre last year.

Lilly Charman, 21, set off from John O’Groats on Thursday 11th June and reached Land’s End on Friday 10th July, where she was welcomed by family.

She described the experience as ‘incredible’ and ‘freeing’ and has raised nearly £1,000 for Southmead Hospital.

During the journey, Lilly battled extreme heat, heavy rain, food poisoning and a broken bike, as well as being attacked by birds which damaged her tent and belongings.

  • Live music at Evie’s Kitchen

A live music event featuring funky rock, pop and disco covers will be hosted by Evie’s Kitchen on Friday 31st July.

Running from 6pm to 10pm in King George V Park, covers band The Karport Collective will play just after 7pm.

There will also be refreshments on site, including pulled pork, loaded fries and burgers, as well as gluten-free and plant-based options, and a licensed bar.

Evie’s Kitchen owner Craig said, “I absolutely love this band and have been trying to get them for some time. Let’s dance, sing and laugh with our pals from this brilliant town and beyond.”

  • Pub quiz raises funds for air ambulance following village collision

A village community has raised funds for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity following a fundraising quiz night organised in support of a local resident.

The event at The White Hart in Atworth was held after a woman from the village was seriously injured in a road traffic collision earlier this year.

Amanda Stonham was walk-
ing on a pavement in the village when she was struck by a car, breaking both legs and sustaining multiple injuries.

She was airlifted to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, where she spent four weeks and underwent three operations.

  • Fundraiser brings community together to support centre

A community fundraising event has brought residents together to support the future of a community centre facing rising costs.

The Forest Community Centre at Bowmans Court held a fun day on Saturday 11th July to raise money and encourage more people to use the volunteer-run facility.

The event, featuring fairground rides, giant inflatables, food vendors and a bar, was described as a reminder of the importance of the centre to the local community.

  • Wiltshire Council to start work on new Local Plan

Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet has agreed to begin work on a new Local Plan for the county, setting out how and where development will take place across the county in the years ahead.

This follows last month’s decision to withdraw the previous Local Plan from examination after concerns were raised by planning inspectors.

Those concerns included issues around housing land supply, reliance on proposed new settlements and how development would align with areas of demand.

The withdrawal of the plan prompted concerns that, without an up-to-date Local Plan in place, developers may be more likely to bring forward proposals on unallocated sites and that appeals against refused applications could be harder for the council to defend.

  • Melksham canoeist wins gold for Great Britain

A freestyle canoeist from Melksham has won gold for Great Britain at the Freestyle Canoe World Cup in France.

Alex Edwards claimed the men’s squirt boat title in Millau last month.

He finished ahead of Germany’s Finn Kroessig and Mike Lochny to take first place on the podium.

Coach Dee Paterson said, “It is a truly fantastic achievement at world level competition.

“Alex went for a high scoring final ride with fast and relentless technical moves, which Alex is internationally famous for. However, it didn’t go as planned but his second round ride scoring 2,170 points meant he achieved a gold medal.”
