A Broughton Gifford parish councillor has raised thousands of pounds for Dorothy House by having her head shaved.
Lesley Holdway who is also the Broughton Gifford WI president had the chop in front of friends and family at her home and has so far raised £2,228 – with the total still growing.
She originally set herself a target of £700 before smashing past that figure as the village has got behind her fundraising effort.
Lesley had her head shaved in her living room by hairdresser Sarah Langsford in front of a large watching audience. She said, “It feels strange having no hair and feels weird. I don’t think I will be looking in the mirror for a while! I have been growing it for a while and I chose Dorothy House as I wanted to do something local and Dorothy House helped my mother before she died. I have had several friends die from cancer and a few who have had cancer and survive. It really does affect everyone and Dorothy House are marvelous at helping not only the patient but also the family.
“I wanted to do something and I know I can’t run far and I don’t like the idea of jumping out of a plane, so this seemed like a good idea.
“I am delighted with how the fundraising has gone. I originally set myself a target of £700 but the money keeps coming in and I am so happy with the support I have received. I am fortunate that my hair grows back quite quickly so it will not be long before I have some coverage, but it will definitely take some getting used to. My grandson asked what I would look like so I told him I shall be old, fat and bald for a short time!”
Amongst those watching Lesley have her head shaved was daughter Katy who said, “She is the bravest mum in the world!”
