Brownies raise money for Dorothy House

A BROWNIE pack in Melksham has presented a cheque to the Dorothy House Hospice Care charity.

Lynne Smith said, “1st Melksham Brownies have been working really hard fundraising for Dorothy House, their chosen charity. They have been saving spare change and held a Bring and Buy Sale during their meeting, which has raised £155.91.

“Ellie Dale from Dorothy House came to collect the cheque from the Brownies.”

  • Melksham residents invited to second community tree planting A second community tree planting day is being held in Melksham this month. The local community group Melksham Green Space is inviting residents to join them at Clackers Brook on Sunday 22nd February. “Volunteers are welcome to help plant trees and shrubs and be part of establishing a new woodland and wildlife habitat in the heart of Melksham,” said Nigel Benham, Chair of Melksham Green Space. “Join us at the Water Meadow Car Park at 10.30am; Bring your spade and wellies, everyone is welcome!” This is the second tree planting event following the successful first one in November when over 400 trees were planted. The group are creating a new woodland which will stretch from Ruskin Avenue, near King George V Park, to the Eastern Bypass, transforming an area of open land into a thriving habitat for wildlife.   • CCTV review finds system failing since installation An independent review has found Melksham’s CCTV system has been failing since it was installed, with cameras regularly dropping offline, producing poor-quality images, recording audio without the public’s knowledge, and failing to record incidents. The report was commissioned after CCTV footage was missing of a collision in which Melksham woman Cheryl Decarteret was killed last September. The technical review, carried out by Smart Integrated Solutions, examined the town’s 77 CCTV cameras, which are managed by Melksham Town Council. The report stated, “A brief analysis of the system identified it was slow to respond, with cameras dropping connection completely or not responding in a timely manner, creating glitchy, blurred, pixelated images. It was confirmed that this has been normal since the installation commenced and was completed in October 2024. “The system is not actively monitored with system operation being limited to a reactive response, rather than actively monitoring public safety and providing real-time support to the authorities.” Read more on our website.   • Free Football Friday returns A free football session for children is back on Friday 20th February. The Future of Football Free Football Fridays are open to girls and boys of all abilities aged six to 12 years old, and take place during school holidays. Free packed lunches are provided for every child attending. There are 80 free spaces available for the session, running at Bowerhill Playing Fields from 10pm to 3pm. Organisers say, “After a record-breaking attendance during the summer holidays last year and October half-term, we are proud to once again offer this brilliant community football programme for local families. “This is all about keeping children active, building confidence and friendships, removing cost barriers and giving parents a safe, positive place for their children to play. “Thanks to our amazing recruiters CMD Recruitment and Elevate Cloud.” Read more on our website.   • Residents make significant steps in Semington pub campaign Villagers in Semington have reached a milestone in their campaign to re-open the 18th-century Somerset Arms. The Semington Pub Action Group has applied to the Financial Conduct Authority to form a Community Benefit Society (CBS) to support their efforts to purchase and restore the historic pub. Ian Williamson, who would become chair of the CBS said, “With the right legal entity in place, we can publish a serious business plan, and we aim to launch a share offer in the very near future” The Somerset Arms has been closed for more than two years, and a village-wide survey confirmed there was overwhelming support for the pub’s reopening. Ian said, “It has been really exciting to see folk of all ages and all walks of life so keen to share ideas and time to make this happen. “We now have a lot of the project management and business know-how that we need.   • Half-term activities in Melksham Families looking for low‑cost, local entertainment during February half-term can look forward to a schedule of activities across Melksham. This includes nature-themed bunting making workshops, led by the Melksham Flag Group, family films at Melksham Assembly Hall and a host of pancake related activities on Pancake Day. Pancake Day – Tuesday 17th February from 12pm Melksham Town Council is hosting a range of pancake themed activities in Market Place.   • Residents invited to shape the future of Melksham parks Residents are being asked for their views on the future of Melksham’s parks, play areas and open spaces as part of a town council consultation. The ‘Your Town, Your Voice, Your Parks’ survey aims to find out which spaces should be prioritised for upgrades and what facilities and improvements residents would like to see. Councillor Adrienne Westbrook said, “The parks in Melksham are pretty sad with the exception of a couple. They haven’t really had any investment in them since Covid. All the parks need to be improved but it has to be undertaken in a phased approach. We are looking at doing three or four parks this year, but they will all be considered in the mix.” Cllr Westbrook said play areas are particularly in need of attention after the last round of refurbishments nearly eight years ago. “Parks have just not been looked after. We took them all on and we did a fairly big refurb and painted them all but that was eight years ago and parks just don’t last. Playground equipment needs updating.   • Future of Melksham discount store uncertain The future of Melksham discount store The Original Factory Shop is uncertain after the company went into administration. The Melksham branch, located in the Market Place, opened 18 years ago. Interpath were appointed administrators on 28th January and the Melksham branch launched a closing down sale the following day. A statement on the branch’s Facebook page said, “While there is a small slither of hope that we could be saved, we are preparing ourselves for the worst. “If we carry on doing well, you may find that store will stay open longer to serve the town as it has proudly done for the past 18+ years. “There is a wonderful team here that are still proudly doing their jobs with a smile, so please be kind.” Read more on our website.   • Popular Melksham man remembered for Blue Pool years Residents have shared memories of Melksham stalwart Alfie Sparks, best known for his decades overseeing the town’s open-air Blue Pool, who died last month aged 95. Alfie was well known to a generation of Melksham residents who spent their summers at the Blue Pool during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, where he worked alongside his wife Joyce for 26 years supervising swimmers and running the popular facility. Resident Sue Mortimer said, “The Melksham children of the 1960s absolutely loved spending their summer holidays at ‘his’ open air pool.
