A ‘Bushtucker Trial’ for care staff at Brookside in Melksham was part of an open day event for care homes, which took place on Friday 20th June.
The care home in Ruskin Avenue had a ‘I’m a carer, get me out of here’ day, with staff doing ‘trials’ including the infamous ‘bushtucker trial’. Almost £200 was raised for the residents’ amenity fund. Staff and visitors were sponsored to eat items such as dried crickets and scorpion lollies, under the watchful eye of ‘Ant and Dec’ whilst the head house keeper spent time in a bath of custard, beans and jelly.
A spokesperson from Brookside said, “It was a fabulous day. Lots of people who planned to stay for just an hour were still here after lunch. Lots of things went on – including fishing various items out of bowls filled with jelly or custard or something else! The residents could take part only if they wanted to, in guessing what was inside six boxes.
“Young people from the Prince’s Trust came, who recently finished creating a new rockery for us, and they were good sports taking part in Bushtucker Trials. We are hoping to do something similar again next year as it was such a successful event!”
Wiltshire Care Partnership says that at least 27 of its members opened their doors to the public on National Care Homes open day on Friday 20th June.
Wiltshire Care Partnership represents over half the county’s providers of older people’s residential and nursing care. The partnership’s chief executive officer, Lesley Frazer said, “The open day gives us the opportunity to share some good news stories with the public about the care provided in the vast majority of care homes.”
