  • Football stalwart Mick Perrin receives BEM for decades of service Melksham Town legend Mick Perrin has collected his British Empire Medal (BEM) which was awarded in recognition of his outstanding dedication to grassroots football and the local community. Mick was presented with the honour by the Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Dame Sarah Troughton, at a special ceremony held at County Hall, Trowbridge, on Monday 7th April. Also in attendance was the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Martin Nye. The award, announced in the New Year’s Honours List, marked a remarkable 62-year association with Melksham Town Football Club, where Mick served as a player, secretary, chairman and president. Mick attended the ceremony with his wife Jenny, children Darren and Stephen, their wives Nicola and Jayne, and grandchildren Kieran and Charlotte. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Melksham gears up for local elections Residents in the Melksham area are preparing to head to the polls on Thursday 1st May as local elections take place across Wiltshire. This year’s Wiltshire Council elections are expected to be hotly contested, with six seats up for grabs in the Melksham area. Candidates are standing from the Conservative Party, Green Party, Liberal Democrats and Reform UK, as well as independent candidates. Wiltshire Council is responsible for key services such as planning, highways, education and social care. The elections come at a time when local issues such as investment in fixing roads and potholes, house building and infrastructure, and funding for local services are high on the agenda.   • Six months on: Wiltshire Council still refuses to answer questions over unprecedented press censorship Six months after Wiltshire Council’s unprecedented decision to cut ties with Melksham News — and its unexplained reversal six weeks later — serious questions remain unanswered. The council’s decision to sever ties with Melksham News in October last year followed an article questioning the council’s public notice advertising policy and highlighting its refusal to allow the issue to be debated in a council meeting. The move was widely criticised by councillors, members of the public, and national media, including Private Eye magazine, which branded the decision “spiteful bullying.” Despite repeated efforts by Wiltshire Publications, parent company of Melksham News, to seek clarity — including meetings with the council’s Chief Executive Lucy Townsend, Head of Legal Services, and separately with council leader Richard Clewer — the authority has refused to explain its decision-making process, correct inaccurate public statements about the newspaper, or answer any of the specific questions submitted.   • Sarum Avenue residents present £16,000 to air ambulance during special visit Residents of Sarum Avenue have presented a £16,000 cheque to the Bath and Wiltshire Air Ambulance, following their successful Christmas lights fundraiser. The presentation took place during a special visit to the air ambulance base, where residents were able to witness first-hand the vital work the service does. Shortly after the cheque was handed over, the alarm went off and the helicopter was called out to an emergency. Residents, including children, had the opportunity to watch the helicopter take off and track its progress on the ops room monitors—seeing their fundraising efforts put to work in real time. The £16,000 was raised through donations collected during a Christmas lights display on Sarum Avenue in December. With 22 houses participating, the event brought together the community, who decorated their homes to create a festive display that attracted visitors from Melksham and beyond.   • Melksham family unites to raise funds for Dorothy House A Melksham family has come together to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care to thank the charity for its ‘outstanding’ support for their dad and grandad who is living with a terminal illness. The family has raised £1,456 through a series of fundraising events for the charity after Paul Cotter was diagnosed with a terminal illness last July. “He was only given two months to live,” said Paul’s daughter, Charlotte Watts. “But he’s still here with us, which is absolutely amazing.” The family’s fundraising campaign, dubbed ‘Fundraising February’, kicked off with a birthday party for Paul. “Instead of presents and cards, people donated to the hospice and we raised around £220,” said Charlotte.   • Owner shares relief as dog saved from eight-day hole ordeal A Melksham dog owner has expressed his heartfelt thanks to a pet charity for saving his dog, who had been trapped in a hole for eight days. Temple, a 13-year-old Jack Russell, went missing whilst on a walk in fields near King George V Park. Upon hearing gunshots from a farm in the distance, Temple bolted, disappearing into a fox or badger sett, where he remained trapped for eight days. “He has been in holes before but he usually comes straight back out,” says his owner, Mark Cummings. “When we realised he wasn’t coming out, it was an awful experience. We got our friends and family to help us search for him; it was truly traumatic. Pets and dogs are such an integral part of the family — it would have just been awful if we were on a walk and his time with us ended.” In case Temple had escaped from the hole later in the day, Mark launched a Melksham- wide search for him with the help of friends and family.
