Mother’s Day next week will see sons and daughters across the country pampering their mums in their own special way. But what of the other female role-models in our lives, should we be spoiling them too?
The age old proverb says, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and for every mother there could be an auntie, grandmother or stepmother that has played a vital role in our lives who deserves a bit of extra love and attention on this special day.
Mother’s Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate mums in the traditional sense, but it also provides us with the opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for the love, care, mentorship, guidance and inspiration that all female role-models bring to our lives.
It doesn’t always have to be about the women who are related to us, they could be women in the community such as foster mothers, teachers, youth group leaders and if you’re old enough, maybe its the local pub landlady who offers you a friendly ear, support and guidance when you need it.
No matter who they are, use Mother’s Day next week to say thank you to the women who have shown you the unconditional love and support when you most need it.
As for how you show your gratitude, there are many ways, big and small, that can show that person how much you care. Here are some tips on how to treat that special someone.
• Take them for a day out. You don’t have to spend lots of money, it could be something as simple as a walk out in the countryside or along the canal, with cake and tea at the end as a reward for burning off all those calories.
• Have a think about what their hobbies and passions are. For the animal lover you could spoil them with a day at the zoo, local farm or maybe surprise them with a llama or goat walking experience.
• If music and entertainment is more their thing, you could buy them a ticket to the latest show at the Assembly Hall who have everything from tributes to the Spice Girls, ABBA and Bee Gees coming up, as well as a steamy performance from the Dream Boys!
• Why don’t you entice the foodie within and treat them to a meal at The White Hart Atworth, where kids eat free. Or make your mother feel extra special by taking her to The Pilot or The Golden Fleece where she will receive a free glass of prosecco or wine with her meal.
• Want something more indulgent? Take her to Cleeve House in Seend for an afternoon of sandwiches, tea and cake.
• How about cooking your own meal at home with 15% off all roasting meats from I.D Newman & Sons?
• Stuck for gift ideas too? There are plenty of options in Melksham from Jewellery at West Country Jeweller, vintage and unique gifts from Ma Maison, perfumes from Gompels or unique frames and mirrors from Andy York.
• Most importantly, show them that you care with a simple thank you. You don’t have to spend money to treat the special woman in your life, sometimes our time and attention is the most precious thing that we can give.
• But if you’re really stuck for ideas, you can’t go wrong with a traditional bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates.
