A VOLUNTEER at Melksham’s new branch of Barnardo’s is supporting a national campaign to encourage people to give their time for good causes.
Christine Clarke, who moved to Melksham 18 months ago, is supporting national Volunteers’ Week and urging others to help in the charity sector. She has worked at the new store on Verbena Court since it opened in February.
Christine said, “I didn’t want to stay indoors, and I thought volunteering would be a good way to get to know people. I’d never done any voluntary work before but the new Barnardo’s shop was almost on my doorstep so it was the obvious choice.
“I help with sorting, steaming and pricing the donations and then putting them out on display.
“There’s a really nice atmosphere and we all get on well together. I always look forward to my days in the shop. I’ve now got to know some of the regular customers and it gives me something else to talk about when I get home!”
Area business manager for Barnado’s, Emma King said, “Christine was the first person to register as a volunteer when we opened and we’re delighted that she enjoys it so much.
“It’s a great way to meet new people, make new friends and learn new skills, as well as helping to fundraise for a very worthy cause.”
