A YOUTH worker from Seend is offering the support of a mobile pop up youth cafe to events in Melksham and the surrounding villages.
Wiltshire Youth for Christ team leader and youth worker, Steve Dewar says, “The ‘pop up’ was set up in response to the needs of local young people, to encourage and help them with dealing with issues affecting them – promoting good choices.
“The Pop Up Youth Cafe resource is a mobile youth space that enables teenagers to play classic games like chess, uno, Jenga and giant Connect 4 or use equipment to enable users to play football, unihoc, volleyball or rounders etc.
“The van is fitted with two side awnings and can support multimedia platforms such as iPads, modern games consoles and sound systems. The mobile resource also includes hot water facilities and space to offer refreshments, this year supplied by local Morrisons and Sainsbury’s stores, to help give young people sustenance in hot and cold weather conditions.”
As well as events in Devizes and Trowbridge, the Pop Up Youth Cafe visited the Seend Village Fete last weekend, and will be attending the final of the Wiltshire Skate Series at Melksham’s skate park on Saturday 7th September.
Steve, who came up with the project and delivers the work with other youth workers, has received support this year from the Devizes Area Board to help start the pop up van resource, but he is still looking for local businesses or individuals to help fulfil its full potential to connect across the rural area and sustain this unique local detached youth work support for the coming years.
