WILTSHIRE and Swindon Credit Union are on hand to offer financial services, regulated by the financial authorities, helping people obtain low cost loans.
A Credit Union is a community-based co-operative operated on ethical principles, run by its members for the benefit of its membership, offering financial services regulated by the financial authorities.
Wiltshire & Swindon Credit Union is a not-for-profit saving and loan co-operative that has been running in Melksham for the last 15 years by member volunteers.
One of the volunteers, Maureen McCourtney said, “As a resident of Melksham for over 40 years I was delighted when over 15 years ago a Credit Union was established in Melksham. I went to the inaugural meeting and was one of the early members to sign up.
“Having read about Credit Unions and the fact that they were run by volunteers with no affiliation to banks or financial institutions, I knew they were available to help the community in good times and bad, by providing low cost loans when rejected by other commercial lenders.
“These days, pay day loan sharks and high interest lenders such as Provident are the norm. But we provide a personal service and are always willing to listen and help, not forgetting that your money is protected to the value of £75,000 under the F.C.S.A.
“I have benefited from the Credit Union in so many ways over the years. I have had a fab holiday to the USA, bought a car, made home improvements etc. Also as a volunteer, I have made many friends.
“We have increased in size and as a result can offer a wider selection of loans and are now known as the Wiltshire and Swindon Credit Union.
“Come along to our collection point at Melksham Library on Fridays 11-1pm or Saturdays 11-12.15pm to find out more information and meet the friendly team of volunteers.”
