The countdown for the big Christmas lights switch-on has begun!
Next weekend the Market Place and Assembly Hall will come alive with festive cheer as the community waits in eager anticipation to find out what the Melksham Christmas Lights volunteers have in store this year.
With last year’s display hailed as the ‘best in the west’, hopes are high for another dazzling lights display in the Market Place and around the town.
The switch-on and fireworks display is scheduled for 5pm, when an unsuspecting and long-standing member of the community will be asked to switch them on.
Before then, from 2pm, revellers can enjoy the annual Christmas Fayre as it hosts over 35 stalls including gifts, handicrafts, tombolas and raffles, food and games, located in the Assembly Hall and Market Place. You can even visit Santa in his grotto!
One of the organisers of the fayre, Sarah Land says, “We have much more variety of stalls this year – perfect for you to find that special Christmas gift for your friends and family. There will be stalls selling jewellery, wood carvings, pens, cakes, kitchenware and even puppets! There will be also plenty of food and drink on offer, with bacon rolls, tea and coffee on sale in the Assembly Hall. Out in the Market Place, there will be pizzas, burgers, popcorn, candyfloss, sweets and hot drinks on sale.”
To keep the crowds entertained, there will be performances from Manor Primary School choir and Melksham Music and Drama in the Assembly Hall. In the Market Place, local band, The Decibelles, will be performing and there will be fairground rides, games and stalls including the popular ‘human fruit machine’ run by Melksham Rotary Club.
The festive fun starts at 2pm when Father Christmas and town crier, Peter Dauncey, officially open the fayre. There will be road closures in the town centre from 4pm.
