A MELKSHAM cyclist has set off on his biggest challenge yet – cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End, alone and unsupported using the 1,173 mile Sustrans cycle network route in just 14 days.
Speaking to Melksham News before he set off on his challenge last Sunday, 12th August, Kevin Pfister said, “I think my friends and family think I’m crazy doing this unsupported, but it has been a burning desire of mine to really push myself and see what I am capable of.
“Being unsupported does mean however I have to take everything with me; camping, sleeping and cooking equipment, as well as food and clothing. It’s a lot to take on a bike, and it’s taken a large amount of planning to get to this point.”
Kevin will be raising money for the British Hen Welfare Trust, the UK’s first charity to raise awareness for the welfare of commercial hens in cages, and with the help of its volunteers, rehome ex-commercial hens.
Kevin explained, “My family and I were fortunate enough to have helped rehome several hens, giving them the best retirement we could. After seeing how their lives were changed and how they became part of family, I hope I can do my best to raise money for this worthwhile cause.”
Kevin is no stranger to ambitious cycling challenges. He once unconventionally used his Brompton bicycle for the Bradford on Avon Hill Climb event, and last month he took part in the Brompton World Championship Final cycle race in central London.
