A charity football match has raised over £9,000 for two charities which supported a local family when their son was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
The match was held on Sunday 3rd August and raised funds for The Grand Appeal at Bristol Children’s Hospital and Harry’s Hat, which both supported local boy Rio Amoroso and his family when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour just over two years ago.
The day saw a friendly game take place between Knorr-Bremse staff, which is where Rio’s dad Danny works, and Melksham Town parents and coaches. There were also refreshments, activities and live music.
“It was well and truly unbelievable; I was amazed at how many people attended,” said Danny.
The final result of the football game saw Melksham Town Parents and Coaches win 5 – 2 against Knorr-Bremse staff, with Rio, who was bought on in the final 10 minutes, scoring the two goals.
“There were a lot of emotions on the day,” said Danny. Bringing Rio on for the final 10 minutes is a good highlight as well as seeing many local people and families and friends all mixing. We had good weather and the match was competitive but friendly and full of banter. They were all chanting Rio’s name.”
After being diagnosed with a brain tumour, Rio, who was around eight years old at the time, was told that he would never play football again.
He spent four months in hospital undergoing several treatments and operations and now has a condition called hydrocephalus, where his brain fluid doesn’t go round his body properly, resulting in balance issues due to issues with feeling on his right side.
However, after channelling his determination and love of football, he now plays for the Harriers at Melksham Town Youth Football Club and was recently captain, leading his team to success, winning their first-ever football tournament.

A representative from Harry’s Hat, which supports children and families living with paediatric hydrocephalus, was also present to enjoy the event.
Following the success of the day, the Knorr-Bremse football team is due to continue playing together. Danny said, “I have contacted local businesses to see if they can get a team together and we could have a few friendlies.”
Danny is also planning on running the event again and next year run it in a tournament style at Oakfield Stadium.
