A RESIDENT has set up a petition signed by over 100 people calling for action as it is felt that speeding has become an increasing problem.
The petition relates to speeding in the Spa Road area and campaigners feel the problem is an increasing one across the town and one that needs to be tackled as they believe it has led to more accidents recently.
The petition has been signed by residents living on Spa Road or adjoining roads and has been handed to Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council Highways Department, Melksham Town Council and to the Melksham News along with a letter. The campaigner says that the additional 1,000 homes planned in the area mean the issue will only get worse and that speeding has already been a contributing factor to a recent accident at Coronation Road.
In the letter to the Melksham News it says, “We the residents are increasingly concerned by the total disregard of the speed limit in the town and on Spa Road by a significant number of motorists. Speeds are often in the order of 40mph and sometimes considerably more.
“In the last few days I have observed two potential incidents, one leaving a skid mark of 20 metres indicating a very high speed and one serious incident at the junction with Coronation Road. Apart from accidents there is also noise and fume pollution issues that we would like the relevant authorities to look at.
“Already whilst out canvassing, I was greeted with a great deal of concern and enthusiasm for the cause. Concern has also been expressed about the extremely poor state of the road, the dangerous mini-roundabout at the hospital and badly worn road markings.”
