PLANS are now well advanced for the Whitley and Shaw Summer Fete on 4th June at Shaw Playing Fields, commencing at 1pm to be opened by the Melksham Carnival Queen.
The event is being organised by CAWS (Community Action Shaw & Whitley) and includes a dog show, BBQ and bar, a display of classic cars, village fete activities and live music.
One of the key initiatives for the day will see Coppins of Corsham, a local goldsmith and silversmith, sponsoring the “Create A Crown’ competition in association with Shaw C of E Primary School.
All 206 children at the local school will be invited to Create a Crown fit for the Queen and after judging all designs, Coppins have kindly offered to make a silver replica of the winning entry. It is hoped the silver crown will then go on permanent display at Shaw School.
Daisy Coppin, who heads up the team at the family-run business said, “We were delighted to be approached and immediately said yes to this exciting project. It’s going to be a lot of fun seeing what the children come up with!”
Kathryn Clark, headteacher at Shaw School said, “The school is very much part of the local community and being involved in the local village fete is a great idea. We look forward to getting stuck in – literally!”
Amongst the attractions are a dog show, BBQ and bar, a display of classic cars and various other local traders, village fete activities and live music from the very popular Rock Choir and The Ukelele Band.
The Carnival Queen, Page and Fairy Princess will be transported in a pink 1958 Buick Roadmaster and the Junior Princess and Butterfly Princess in a red 1963 Ford Galaxie 500.
Roger Sumner of Cult Status Cars (www.cultstatuscars.com) is bringing along some of his own cars and also inviting others he knows and is sponsor some prizes including a ‘Best of British’ prize.
Tickets for the raffle draw are now on sale at the Whitley Stores Community Shop and prizes to be won include a patio set kindly donated by Whitehall Garden Centre; a stand-up paddle board; a signed Bath Rugby shirt; and meal vouchers for various local restaurants, including Walcot House in Bath. All proceeds raised will be utilised for the benefit of the community.
There will be no car parking provided at The Village Hall and visitors are respectfully requested not to park in The Beeches or surrounding roads. Visitor car parking is provided in the field adjacent to Whitley Golf Club, by kind permission of the golf club.
To alleviate parking and to aid the elderly, infirm and those without transport, Community Action Whitley & Shaw (CAWS) will also be providing a mini bus with driver doing shuttle runs to and from the surrounding villages to the fete during the afternoon
