A LOCAL couple who ran The Bear Hotel on Bath Road, in the 1970s, are celebrating a milestone in their marriage this month as they mark their 70th wedding anniversary.
Bowerhill residents, Fred and Molly Curd, celebrated their 70th anniversary on 27th March, after getting married in the 1950s, in Trowbridge Registry Office.
“We have been so lucky,” explains Fred, who is 93 years old. “We are still here; we have had a good life; we have three children; and are in good health. 70 years of marriage have been brilliant.”
In 1941, Fred and his family were evacuated from London to Atworth. “It was quite an experience, really; there were quite a few evacuees,” explained Fred. “I was in Atworth at the time; there were about 20 or 30 there. We went into the church hall for school; after a while, we were then allowed to go back into Atworth School.”
The couple met when Molly, who was from Devizes, was working at Stonar School, near Atworth, where Fred’s mum also worked.
“Over the years we ran The Bear in the ‘70s for about four or five years, then decided to stop,” says Fred. “We then moved back to our house that was being rented out at the time and did other things. I worked at Dowty Engineering for a bit and went out to Saudi Arabia.”
Surrounded by 30 members of their family, the couple marked their anniversary at The Westbrook inn, Bromham. “We have been so lucky,” says Molly.
