COME and join Wiltshire Wildlife Trust for a day of discovering the dragonflies and damselflies of Conigre Mead on 1st July.

The nature day will run from 11am-2pm. Meet at the Sainsbury’s entrance of Conigre Mead Nature Reserve.

  • New breakfast initiative at Melksham Food Bank. A new initiative offering cooked breakfasts for those in need has been launched by the Melksham Food Bank team following a grant from the town council. Melksham Town Council has awarded the food bank a grant of £700 to fund the service, which will include two sessions for cooked breakfasts, as well as a special Christmas lunch for their clients. A trustee of the food bank, Alan McFall, said, “The meals will be especially welcome as the colder weather arrives and are an opportunity for clients and volunteers to sit down, have a chat and enjoy a meal together.   • Rising drumming star showcases talents at UK Drum Show. Melksham’s rising drumming star, Joe Thomas, showcased his talents on the main stage of this year’s UK Drum Show. Joe, 16, delivered two performances on the show’s first-ever Mini Main Stage last month, after beating thousands of other drummers from across the country to secure the spot. His mum, Amy Thomas, said he played Bound to the Burn by Counterparts and 87 by Polyphia to an ‘exceptionally high standard.’ “I think I held my breath throughout the whole performance out of nerves,” says Amy. Throughout the weekend, Joe explored the show, visiting various drum company stands and trying out a range of high-quality drum kits. He also attended masterclasses from renowned drummers, including Nic Collins (son of Phil Collins), Chris Coleman, Aquiles Priester, Bernard Purdie and Chris Turner. Joe had a memorable encounter with Chris Turner, drummer for metalcore band Oceans Ate Alaska, who came to watch Joe’s performance after chatting with him.   • Volunteers recognised for Girlguiding dedication in London. Two Melksham Girlguiding volunteers attended a VIP event in London’s Leicester Square last month to celebrate their long-standing commitment to Girlguiding. Christine Glover and Pam Rainsley were invited to the annual awards presentation in London to recognise the voluntary work they have undertaken for the Girlguiding movement over the last 40 years. Christine has been with Wiltshire South Guides since 1983 and has also been in British Girlguiding Overseas in Germany and Saudi Arabia.   • Melksham couple fundraising for Peru trek in aid of Dorothy House. A Melksham couple are working hard to raise funds to take part in a trek to Peru in support of the local hospice, Dorothy House. Liza Pinching and her husband, David, aim to raise £12,000 to fund the trek in April 2026. The funds raised will go to Dorothy House, where Liza works, to provide vital support for the hospice’s palliative and end-of-life care, as well as bereavement counselling for families. “I’m raising the money to put back into the hospice care,” Liza said. “As a charity, we only get a small amount of NHS funding, so the more money I can raise, the better it will be.   • A fresh start for Melksham Oak with new senior leadership team. The new senior leadership team at Melksham Oak Community School say they are looking forward to helping the school flourish and encouraging students to have high aspirations. The town’s only secondary school was in the public eye last year following parents’ complaints and teacher strikes; however, the new team is now looking forward to a fresh start. New executive headteacher David Cooper has taken over the leadership of the school from former headteacher Haris Hussain.   • Police call for witness after elderly man mugged outside Sainsbury’s. Wiltshire Police are calling for witnesses or anyone who has information to come forward after an elderly man was mugged outside of Sainsbury’s at the end of last month. The man, who is in his 80s, said he was approached by a woman at around 2.30pm on Saturday 28th September, claiming to be collecting money for charity. A statement from Wiltshire Police said, “He gave her some cash and she grabbed him into a hug. “After entering the store and when trying to pay for his shopping he realised that around £60 was missing. “The woman is described as a white woman, around 5ft 6ins tall of a slim build.   • Local mum’s CPR campaign gains national attention. A Melksham mum has taken her campaign for CPR awareness to the national stage, urging all new parents to learn this critical skill after her own experience saving her baby’s life. Over the past few years, Hayley Gardyj, a mother of three from Bowerhill, has been campaigning to ensure that all new parents are given CPR training, following her traumatic experience of giving CPR to her son Brodie when he stopped breathing as a newborn. Recently, Hayley featured in an infant CPR training video produced by the British Red Cross and appeared on Channel 5 News, sharing her powerful story and the importance of CPR training. “I feel that the message is reaching more people and being spread far and wide,” Hayley said. “More people are joining the campaign and sharing the CPR video, including health visitors, midwives, and paediatricians who I work with at HCRG Care Group.   • Now or never opportunity for town to buy former Blue Pool site. Melksham Town Council has agreed to enter negotiations with Wiltshire Council to acquire the former Blue Pool site, which may also incorporate the Assembly Hall in its redevelopment. This opportunity has been labelled a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ chance for the town. Councillors have long discussed the potential of the Blue Pool and Assembly Hall sites as a potential site for a new facility or venue.   • Mother raises awareness of organ donation after daughter’s life-saving heart transplant. A MOTHER from Melksham has shared her teenage daughter’s extraordinary journey of receiving a heart transplant to encourage more people to consider organ donation. In a show of support, last month the Town Hall was lit up in pink as part of the national campaign to raise awareness. Carlie Robson’s 15-year-old daughter, Ciara Cottle, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy earlier this year, a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and struggles to pump blood effectively.
