A CONCERNED Melksham couple is urging dog owners to take more responsibility after their cat was mauled by a dog not on a lead.
Dean and Marianne’s cat, Dominic, was killed after a dog ran over to a neighbour’s drive where Dominic was sat before attacking and fatally injuring the cat. The incident was heard by residents, including adults and children, which caused much distress. The dog then ran off and its owner is not known.
The couple’s main concern is that it could happen again and that another cat or even a child could be attacked.
The incident happened on Cranesbill Road and the dog came from a field between Cranesbill Road and Snarlton Lane.
Marianne is urging dog owners to be more cautious, “This incident could have been avoided if the owner of the dangerous dog had obeyed the law and kept her dog on a lead under control.
“My concern is that another animal or worse still a child could be mauled and destroyed in the same brutal manner as my cat, suffering a terrifying, horrendous death.
“Dog owners need to keep their pets on a lead and they should always be in sight as the owner of the dog that mauled by cat was nowhere to be seen. My neighbours who heard the attack were shocked, appalled and fearful for their children’s safety. The children were distraught.
“The owner of the dog is unknown, however, she was seen across the field by my neighbours who heard the incident and can identify her even though she disappeared quickly after the event, not assuming responsibility for her selfish, thoughtless, actions. Since this event the neighbourhood is in uproar that such a dangerous animal is not being controlled. Everyone is looking for this uncaring human being. Everyone is fearful for their personal safety.”
The dog is described as a large brown Pit Bull-type breed.
Wiltshire Police are aware of the incident and anyone with information should call 101 and quote police reference number 54150018563
