LOCAL dog walkers gathered recently at the park on Hazelwood Road to show their support for the campaign to stop the area being sold to developers.
A campaign began in September when councillors suggested that the open space could be sold to raise money for a new Melksham Community Campus, which is considerably over budget.
Hundreds of people have signed petitions against the sale, and dog owners in the area were keen to show their support.
Paul Simmons said, “The park is an ideal place for the community that uses it to exercise both our dogs, and ourselves. Unlike other areas you don’t have to cross busy roads to get to it, and it has safe boundaries for both dogs and children.
“I know the council and the campus board are saying it’s only a suggestion at the moment, but we would like to voice our objection before it goes too far.”
Andy Green said, “As a social area we have all made close friends through walking our dogs here and it would be sad to see another point of contact taken away from Melksham. It’s been said before, and I’ll say it again; once it’s gone it’s gone forever.”
