SINCE kicking off in November, Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy’s Keeping Warm This Winter pop-up energy sessions have helped over 120 local residents understand how they can reduce their energy bills and stay warm as the temperature plummets.
Jessica Thimbleby from WWCE has been working closely with local community groups and organisations to run the sessions. Workshops have been hosted by groups including the Over 60s’ film club, community larder, lunch clubs, and That Meeting Space, offering helpful tips and advice, and giving residents an opportunity to have their questions around increasing energy efficiency at home, answered.
Jessica was also on hand to suggest ways to reduce draughts, damp and condensation, and deal with the risk of mould as people have the heating on less.
Jessica said, “The events have been really well received by residents in Melksham and the surrounding area. The feedback we’ve had is that the cafes have been very helpful, particularly the practical displays which have reached people who have been struggling with energy bills. I hope everyone went away having learnt new things and knowing how they can access further support if they need it.
“We’re grateful to everyone who has hosted our energy cafes so far and helped us to reach as many people as possible, giving them a safe and welcoming space to find out more and ask questions. It’s a worrying time for many, particularly as it’s been getting colder, but help is out there.”
Julian Barlow chair of WWCE said, “As well as being chair of WWCE I am also a local parish councillor from Compton Bassett, so am all too aware of the devastating effect these cruel energy price hikes can have on the more vulnerable members of our community in Wiltshire. That is why I am so pleased that our community energy company can provide practical tips and advice and I am not surprised that Jess is finding her work is so well received.”
The WWCE is planning more pop-up energy cafes in the new year.
