ENIGMA twirl team of Melksham have been together now since June 2012, with nearly 30 members ranging from four years and over.
Since moving to Melksham the team has taken part in a number of competitions and has also supported the local community and schools by performing at fetes and fairs; some at very short notice.
Tanya Denning–Kuijper, troupe leader said, “Our team’s success has been down to the drive and support of its members, committee and troupe leaders, along with the continued support of the local community, to which we are very thankful.
“For many of you when you think of baton twirling and or majorettes you think of carnivals, where you see the different teams dancing and marching plus twirling a baton to music. This is the case for carnival events, but the sport offers so much more. If you think of rhythmic gymnastics, dance and baton twirling combined that is the discipline we teach, along with military drills and cheerleading being other factors within the sport. The team members learn discipline, teamwork and self-confidence as well as flexibility and fitness; a fantastic way to exercise and have fun.
“This season’s competitive year has been great once again, with a total of 56 top six placements so far. We have another three competitions to go before the season finishes, and we are hopeful of more fantastic results. For a troupe that has only been running just over a year, this really is something to be proud of, especially when all the other troupes who we compete against have been formed and running at least five years.
“This year is the first time that we will be taking part in carnivals, and we are looking at performing within the Wessex Carnival Circuit. All very exciting, especially as some of the team members have never seen an illuminated carnival before, let alone taken part in one!
“The team has worked hard over the past year fundraising to be able to pay for kit and costumes. We have also been lucky last year in receiving grants from Melksham Extended Services, Town council and the Local Almshouses, which was a huge help in purchasing kit and covering hall hire, what with starting out.
“The team try their best at fundraising themselves, with some of the members doing sponsored walks, twirl’s, bike rides etc with bag pack events at local supermarkets being one of the favourites.”
Enigma will be hosting a Bingo Night at Melksham Liberal Club on Friday 6th September to help raise funds for the team.
“Please come along and support them and enjoy a night out with the possibility of winning a few prizes at the same time!” added Tanya.
“Local estate agents Lock & Key have also been a tremendous help to us, with funding and helping with printing flyers and other key factors that have been vital in the team’s development.”
Recently Tanya presented Faye Fitzgerald, director of Lock & Key with a gift from the team to say ‘thank you’ for their continued support.
Enigma is now looking for a sponsor to help them with their annual expenses and purchase of additional kit and costumes for the New Year ahead in 2014.
If you, or any business is willing to sponsor Melksham’s dynamic troupe, or if you would like to join, please contact Tanya on 07702 808079.
