LOCAL organisation Future of Football (FOF) are working with all Melksham’s primary schools to create an exciting new format of school football.
Nine Melksham schools have signed up to participate in the Future of Football School League which FOF are describing as the most exciting thing to happen in local school football for years.
FOF director Luke Ballinger said, “Primary school football needs a massive shake-up and that’s what we are here to do. Whilst Future of Football’s key goal day-to-day is to develop players, we want to create long lasting memories. School football will now play a huge part in young player’s development in the area.”
Principal of Bowerhill Primary School, Chris Light said, “All head teachers in the Melksham area are extremely excited about this new concept; Future of Football has proposed a truly exciting football league programme that will provide opportunity, drive participation, improve young players and create lasting memories of school football. It’s exactly the direction sport should be taken.”
Director of FOF James Stapleton said, “Every school will put forward five teams from each year group (Years 2 to 6). All schools will be given a new club badge and identity which will have a professional and consistent look and feel. Every child will sport a brand-new kit, so we are looking for a sponsor to cover 500 shirts.
“To begin with, four events will be held per year with a finals event held in May. Team names are as follows; The River Mead Rhinos; The Bowerhill Bombers; Shaw Scorpions; Forest and Sandridge Sharks; Manor Tigers; Aloeric Lions; Seend Centaurs; St George’s Dragons; and finally, Broughton Gifford Bears.
“In years gone by, school football was taken quite seriously; it was strong and very competitive. To play for your school was always a proud moment. We want to bring that back.
“Our meeting with the head teachers was exciting and well received, the hardest part was getting them all to decide which team name they wanted!”
