Broughton Gifford is hosting its third annual games this year on Saturday 2nd August.
Organiser Christopher Fielden said, “Following England’s disappointing performance in Brazil, an early opportunity is being given for the next generation of players at the games, with table-top football being the feature sport, with preliminary rounds being held on The Common at 12.30pm and in The Fox at 5.00pm and the final rounds in the village hall at 6.30pm. Football is, however just one amongst more than 30 events being held throughout the day from 10.00am to 7.00pm. at a number of venues. These range from beach-volleyball to Mackerel juggling, putting the cabbage to a tug-of-war and darts to egg-throwing.
“There is something to appeal to everyone with sports for the children during the afternoon and a canine obstacle course in the morning. The day will finish in the village hall at 7.00pm when it is hoped that the medals will be presented by a star of Bath Rugby. There is already a great deal of international interest being expressed with entries having been received from Hue Pham, the Ladies Paper-Plate Discus Champion of Vietnam, as well as competitors from Spain and Ireland.
“With a 10.00am start on The Common, people can join in the fun at any stage during the day.
“This may not have been the best year for British sport, but here is the opportunity for us to show that in some fields we are unbeatable.”
