Hat-trick ‘Gold’ win for Melksham!

MELKSHAM has scored another Gold award in the South West in Bloom awards, making it three years in a row.

The news has delighted volunteers and the town council team who have spent countless hours smartening up buildings in the town centre, planting flowers and plants, and picking up litter.

Highlights this year included medieval flags in the Market Place, floral artwork on the former Tavern pub, a wildflower meadow with bug hotel on Bath Road, a new community garden behind the former spiritualist church on King Street, and a three-dimensional floral bee sculpture on the Market Place roundabout.

Chair of the South West in Bloom Melksham team, Kathy Iles told Melksham News, “It’s amazing! And fantastic to win the hat-trick of Golds! It’s also a relief, there was a lot of pressure on us to maintain the standard we had set ourselves and win the Gold again.

“Big thanks to everybody involved – all the litter pickers, painters, planters, weeders, and flag makers. Everybody worked so hard. The stunning floral bee and wildflowers on the Market Place roundabout were a stand-out highlight – the icing on the cake. Richard (Collett) did an amazing job.”

The ‘Bloom’ team have dedicated this year’s Gold award to former Melksham resident and regional secretary of South West in Bloom, Denise James, who died this month, shortly before the awards ceremony in Newquay.

Kathy said, “It was a very emotional day. Denise was diagnosed with terminal cancer three weeks ago – she passed away before the awards ceremony – we are all still in shock.

“Denise was a Melksham girl, and it was her idea in 2014 that the town should enter South West in Bloom. Melksham wouldn’t be winning all these awards if it wasn’t for Denise – so this win is for her. We are hoping to plant something in tribute to Denise in ‘The Friends Garden’ – possibly a magnolia tree, as she loved the one in the grounds of Melksham House.”

The awards ceremony also brought ‘blooming’ good news for the Melksham entrants in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ categories. The Conigre Mead Nature Area, Jo’s Upcycled Flower Garden at Waitrose, and Church Walk were all awarded with an ‘Outstanding’.

Bowerhill Residents Action Group (BRAG) also achieved an ‘Outstanding’ award for their picnic area, making it six years in a row for the team.

Forest & Sandridge Primary School, Shaw C of E Primary School, and ‘The Friends Garden’ – the project to create a new community space located behind the former spiritualist church on King Street, were all awarded with a ‘Thriving’.

‘Blooming Corner’ – the project to create a wildflower area with a bug hotel on Bath Road – was awarded an ‘Advancing’. Brookside Care Home and the Avon Bowls Club both walked away with a  Gold award at the ceremony for their entries in the ‘business, leisure and tourism’ category.

The Melksham ‘Bloom’ committee is now busy preparing for their 2020 entry, and are inviting the community to join them at their AGM to share their ideas for what next year’s theme could be.

“We need to up our game for next year if we want to win the Gold again and also win the Sargent Cup,” added Kathy.

“We had a nice feedback session with the judges after the awards ceremony, which gave us some tips for what we need to focus on – but other ideas for what we could do next year are welcome.

“We also need more volunteers, so if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty and being out in all weathers, then we would love to see you at the AGM  – you don’t have to be a gardener, people of all skill levels are welcome.”

The South West in Bloom Melksham AGM will be held on Tuesday 5th November at 7pm at the Town Hall.

  • Proposals for 250 homes across two sites in Bowerhill

Plans are being developed for 250 new homes across two separate sites in Bowerhill, both with proposed access from the A365 Bath Road.

One proposal, put forward by developer Hannick, includes 200 homes on land next to Melksham Oak Community School. The site, which covers approximately 11.44 acres, is allocated for housing in Wiltshire Council’s draft Local Plan and also includes land reserved for the school’s future expansion.

The developer is proposing a mix of housing types, with 30% designated as affordable housing, alongside green infrastructure and public open space.

A public consultation is currently underway, and earlier this week, residents were invited to view the plans at an exhibition held at Oakfield Stadium. The proposals can also be viewed online at www.bathroadmelksham.com, where comments can be submitted until Thursday 27th June.

  • Town’s food bank now registered with official charity status

Melksham’s food bank has officially become a registered charity and marked the milestone with a launch event earlier this month.

Now known as Melksham Foodbank and Lifeline CIO, the charity will continue to provide thousands of food parcels to residents in Melksham and surrounding villages.

Charity status means the organisation can now claim Gift Aid on donations, which the team says will have a ‘significant’ impact.

Local councillors, charity members and other dignitaries attended the launch event to learn more about the charity’s work.

  • Radioactive contamination found at former Christie Miller site

Radioactive contamination has been detected at the former Christie Miller site following an environmental survey of the area. Wiltshire Council confirmed last month that contractors at the former RAF Melksham base in Bowerhill “identified radiation dose rates that were slightly higher than the normal background dose rates expected in the UK.”

The council insists there is “no elevated risk to the general public,” but has applied to the Environment Agency to carry out further investigations.

The contamination was found at the former Christie Miller sports centre – an RAF hangar which has been demolished and is being redeveloped by Wiltshire Council as a depot for its highways operations. Contractors had already found asbestos as part of the demolition work.

The former RAF Melksham station was established in 1940 as a base for the RAF School of Instrument Training and, later, the RAF Armament School.

  • Plan to relocate Melksham’s Aldi store to former Countrywide Farmers site

Supermarket chain Aldi is planning to relocate its Melksham store from Beanacre Road to a new site near the Farmers Roundabout.

The proposed location is the former Countrywide Farmers PLC site, which has stood vacant since the company went into administration and closed the store in May 2018.

The retailer says the current store “no longer meets Aldi’s needs” and that the new site would provide “easy access to a high-quality, low-price retailer”.

Aldi has confirmed that current staff in Melksham would be retained, with additional jobs created for the community. The existing Beanacre Road store will remain open while plans for the new site are progressed.

An online public consultation has been launched for residents to view the proposals and share their feedback before it closes on 25th June.

  • Carnival Prince to donate 25 inches of hair for cancer charities

Melksham’s seven-year-old Carnival Prince is set to have 25 inches of his hair cut off on carnival day to support this year’s Carnival Queen fundraising campaign for cancer awareness.

Guy Newman, whose hair currently measures 29 inches, is raising money for CoppaFeel! – a youth-focused breast cancer charity – in honour of Carnival Queen Debbie Holman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and has been fundraising for the charity.

The haircut will take place on the morning of Melksham Carnival, Saturday 5th July, with local salon Libra Hair Studio carrying out the cut. Guy’s hair will also be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their hair due to cancer or other conditions.

  • Melksham defibrillator unavailable in emergency due to council registration error

A defibrillator outside Melksham’s fire station could not be used during a medical emergency earlier this year – because it wasn’t registered on the national system used by ambulance services to locate life-saving equipment. In February, a resident tried to access the defibrillator – which is managed by Melksham Town Council – following a serious medical incident involving a family member. However, when they called 999, South Western Ambulance Service was unable to locate the equipment.
