NO? Perhaps your grandparents or parents or neighbours have. Perhaps one day you might want/need to use them. The organisers of Link say, “Can we tell you a bit about us and what we do. We know what you’re thinking “another organisation wanting volunteers” this is true but please read on before you dismiss us.
“We are Melksham & District Link Scheme run entirely by volunteers for, you, your neighbours and everyone in need in the community. Our function is to take people who are mostly elderly and vulnerable to hospital and medical appointments, local appointments and some further afield.
“You might be a fit and healthy person with a car, who is not aware that the NHS no longer provide transport for needy people, except in extreme circumstances. Some of the people we take often have no relatives nearby and when they have an appointment at RUH Bath or Swindon, they don’t know how to get there, especially if they are not very mobile and cannot manage the buses, (if there are any) and cannot afford a taxi. So they call Link and our kind and helpful voluntary drivers take them to their appointments.
“Before any of this can happen, someone needs to answer the phone and these are our selfless, helpful volunteer transport co-ordinators. We presently have four volunteers, who take the phones for a week at a time, but we could do with a few more so that we can share the work out and maybe only work one week in six. This job is essential to enable Link to keep running as it has been doing for more than 20 years.
“If you like chatting on the phone [mobile provided] and you like people and want to help your community, please contact us on 07979 129052 or email melkshamlink@gmail.com One of our team will be happy to have a conversation with you and explain in more detail what we do and answer any questions you may have.”
