LOCAL train users are setting up a new group to discuss and campaign for better rail services in Melksham as the station goes from strength to strength.
The Melksham Rail User Group, a rebrand of the current railway development group, is inviting local people to its first meeting next Friday, 24th June, from 7.30pm at the Town Hall.
The group will be looking to further improve the service at Melksham Station, which has seen journey and passenger numbers skyrocket over the past few years.
Local community rail officer Graham Ellis said, “Without the small development group set up in 1985, we would not have anything like the train service we have today, and indeed it’s very likely we would have no train service at all.
“Our vision now is one of an hourly train service, a longer platform and longer trains, and better station access from Foundry Close and Forest.
“Users, potential users, local businesses and organisations are welcome to join our group, which will have an informal free membership, and help us work towards this vision.”
The group will take on roles from the development group and will provide a direct feedback from passengers to Great Western Railway; special events and promotions such as the ‘Santa Special’ at Christmas; regular talks and project updates; and the Station Friends organisation, which looks after Melksham’s station.
The rail user group will be part of the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership; a body including train companies and local councils which is working to improve and promote the line.
