MELKSHAM’S St. Michael and All Angels Church is opening its doors for a Heritage Day on Saturday 10th September, from 10.00am-5.00pm, welcoming people to look inside the Grade 2 listed building which is nearly 900 years old.
Visitors to the event can expect to see a display of historical pictures from the 1700s to recent times and view church vestments and communion vessels on the altar. Refreshments will also be available on the day.
Parish records will also be on display covering baptisms, marriages, and funerals since the early 1800s to modern times. The recently restored pipe organ will also be played at various points in the day and experts will be available to share knowledge on the bells, tower clock and general history of the church building.
St. Michael and All Angels Church will also be the visiting point for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Ride and Stride event, a sponsored bike ride or walk raising money for the county’s churches.
The event is part of the Heritage Open Days national scheme which gives people the opportunity to experience local history, architecture and culture. As well as being available on Saturday 10th, the parish records and displays will be available for inspection on Sunday 11th September from 12.30pm (after morning service) to 4.00pm; on Monday 12th September from 10.00am-4.00pm; and from Tuesday 13th to Friday 16th September – please see church notice board for details.
