TWO local red telephone boxes are to be adopted by the town council for use for community projects.
The telephone box on Spa Road, opposite Giffords Surgery, and the telephone box on Littlejohn Avenue, next to the Pig and Whistle pub, are to be taken out of service by BT.
The town council intends to work with local groups to transform the historic telephone boxes into assets for the community. Local group, Melksham in Bloom, has already expressed an interest in the telephone box on Spa Road, describing plans to use the telephone box as a space for plants.
Residents from Littlejohn Avenue and the surrounding area will be consulted for ideas for their local telephone box.
At last month’s full town council meeting, cllr Vanessa Fiorelli said, “ This is our chance to safeguard a piece of Melksham history. Once they are gone, they are gone – it’s important we take ownership of these phone boxes.”
The council also intends to seek third-party funding to support the project.
