Lowbourne Osteopaths reached out to the next generation of potential osteopaths by attending a Careers Fair at Melksham Oak School on Tuesday 6th February.
Steve McMullen, an associate osteopath at the Lowbourne osteopathic clinic, volunteered to join Melksham Oak’s year 8 Careers Carousel. During five, 30-minute sessions, he met around 100 students.
While many students had considered some form of healthcare as a future career, none had realised that osteopathy could be included on their list of options, as only one student had even heard of osteopathy!
Following activities that included mind mapping, Q & As and testing each other’s reflexes, students gained an introduction into the history of osteopathy, the benefits it can offer anybody experiencing aches and pains, and some of the skills and learning needed to pursue a career as an osteopath.
Steve said, “When I was 13 years old, I had no idea there was any kind of medical care beyond doctors and hospitals. By chatting with these students, I hoped to give them an awareness that there are other sources of healthcare available to communities, and maybe plant a seed of curiosity that will ultimately lead some of them to a very rewarding career in osteopathy.”
This was the first time Lowbourne Osteopaths have attended a student careers fair, and Steve is excited at the prospect of taking part in similar events.
