‘Friends of Shurnhold Fields’ is holding its annual general meeting on Tuesday 29th October at the Town Hall from 7pm.

The committee supports the ongoing development and maintenence of ‘Shurnhold Fields’ – the mini country park on the site of the former George Ward School playing fields. Anyone interested in joining the committee or giving any input to the group would be most welcomed.

  • Melksham Town Hall becomes Bra Bank collection point Residents are invited to drop off unwanted bras at Melksham Town Hall to generate funds for charity, give quality bras a new lease of life and reduce the number of textiles going to landfill. Bra Banks offer an environmentally friendly way to raise money while reducing textile waste. Through the scheme, participating organisations receive 50p per kilogram of donated bras to put towards a charity of their choice. Councillors approved the introduction of a Bra Bank at the town hall at a recent Full Council meeting. Cllr Jennie Westbrook said, “I am really pleased that Melksham Town Council is supporting this simple but powerful initiative. The Bra Bank gives residents an easy way to reduce waste, support women in need and raise money for good causes at the same time.   • Melksham veteran set for 24-hour endurance challenge A Melksham veteran is set to take on a 24-hour endurance challenge in April in aid of a charity supporting veterans. Stephen Crawshaw-Bowen, who served in the Army for 12 years, will run five miles every four hours for 24 hours while carrying 20kg. He is raising funds for the Army Benevolent Fund, which provides lifelong support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families facing hardship, injury, illness or financial difficulty. Stephen said, “Their work ensures that those who have served our country are never left behind and every donation will help make a real difference to the lives of those who have given so much.” Read more on our website.   • Melksham Carer Café offers support for unpaid carers Unpaid carers in Melksham are invited to take a short break from their caring responsibilities at the monthly Melksham Carer Café, hosted by Carers Together Wiltshire. Held on the first Thursday of every month from 10.30am to 12pm at The Kings Arms Hotel, the café provides a friendly and informal space for carers to meet others in a similar situation. Organisers say, “The sessions are designed as an opportunity to chat, relax and connect with other carers who really ‘get it’, with a focus on wellbeing and peer support. There is no set agenda and no need to book – carers can simply turn up on the day.” Carers Together Wiltshire supports unpaid carers across the county, offering information, guidance and opportunities to reduce isolation.   • Councils call for cemetery decision to be reversed The town and parish councils are calling on Wiltshire Council to reverse its decision not to extend Melksham Cemetery as it nears capacity. Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council have agreed to write to Wiltshire Council requesting that it reconsider its decision not to extend the cemetery on land along the A350 The call comes after Wiltshire Council predicted that new burial plots could run out by April, following its latest review of cemetery provision.   • Women’s rugby to mark International Women’s Day with showcase games Women’s rugby in Melksham will mark International Women’s Day with two showcase games at Oakfields. The matches will take place on Sunday 8th March and will feature Melksham’s ladies’ team and the club’s girls’ section. Melksham Ladies will take on Drybrook Ladies, while the Under-12 Fawns will face Royal Wootton Bassett in a celebration of women’s and girls’ rugby at the club. Melksham Ladies Head Coach, Hannah Berrely, said, “We are really looking forward to playing on International Women’s Day at our club, made all the more special having the Fawns girls teams playing alongside us.   • Melksham Healing Café marks first anniversary A monthly healing cafe in Melksham has marked its first anniversary. The Melksham Healing Café meets on the first Monday of each month at ‘that meeting space’, offering free coffee, cake, and the opportunity for prayer. Modelled on the Bath Healing Café, the Melksham group is led by Nancy Millard and supported by Christian volunteers from across the area. Their aim is to provide a warm welcome, refreshments and prayer for anyone who chooses to drop-in. Cafe facilitator Sharon Firth, who is helping to facilitate the spread of the cafés regionally, said, “As well as offering support to people who want to set up similar cafés, we are developing training courses for those who want to learn more about the Christian healing ministry.” Read more on our website.   • Residents call for support over car park closure plans Residents are urging Wiltshire Council to review local parking provision ahead of the planned closure of Lowbourne Car Park. Union Street and Lowbourne residents say many use the car park, and its closure will leave them unable to park near their homes, creating a ‘ripple effect’ in the area. Wiltshire Council, which owns the car park, confirmed it will close when the former library site is developed for flats for older people. Residents are calling on the council to consider keeping part of the car park available. Rebecca Mitchener, who has lived on Union Street for 12 years, said, “Lowbourne Car Park is essential to many people living here and as I rely on it to park safely near my home, I want to do whatever is possible to save at least part of it. Not having somewhere to park is not a reasonable living standard in 2026. As neighbours we have grouped together but we need whatever support we can get.” Read more on our website.   • Beatles tribute show set for Seend Fans of the Fab Four are in for a treat next month as The Vox Beatles bring their authentic and energetic tribute show to Seend Centre. The show, on Saturday 14th March, promises to take audiences on a musical journey through the Beatles’ incredible career, from the raw energy of the Cavern Club through the heights of Beatlemania, and into the colourful Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, White Album and Rooftop Concert eras. The show features a number of costume changes, capturing every Beatles look from smart suits to psychedelic Sgt. Pepper tunics with songs from a catalogue of more than 100 hits. The Vox Beatles impressive résumé includes performances at iconic venues including The Cavern Club in Liverpool, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and the QE2 in Dubai. Melksham Town 1-1 Malvern Town Melksham Town have eased their relegation worries with four points from two difficult home games against promotion chasing sides. They won 1-0 against fourth placed Winchester City on Saturday 14th February before earning a point with a 1-1 draw against second placed Malvern last Saturday, 21st February. Before the game against Winchester, there was a minute’s silence to remember Mick Perrin, who devoted more than six decades to the club as a player, secretary, chairman and president. On the pitch, the winning goal came from Will Christopher after 60 minutes in a feisty encounter which saw seven yellow cards and a late red for Winchester’s Tom Wright. Read more on our website.
