MELKSHAM 60+ Club celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee at Queensway Chapel with a Jubilee cake and cream teas. 

The club reports, “Our oldest member, Gwen Farr, cut the cake, which was made by Vanda’s Cakes. Gwen is 101 this year. 

“Pictures show Pat and Peter Taylor enjoying their cream scones with other members; and Steve Chudley sporting his Union Jack waistcoat!”

  • Over-55s disco, open mic and quiz among August events There is a busy August ahead at Melksham Cons Club An afternoon disco for the over-55s, an Open Mic Night and quiz night are all planned, alongside their weekly Wednesday poker nights. The afternoon disco for the over-55s will take place on Friday 14th August from 1pm to 3pm, featuring music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Organisers are promising an afternoon of “great music, dancing and fun”. Entry costs £2.50 and non-members are welcome, as they are at all events. The club’s Open Mic Night returns on Saturday 22nd August, giving performers the chance to showcase their talents in front of a live audience. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Men’s walk to shine light on mental health Men across Melksham are being invited to join a free community walk and evening of talks aimed at raising awareness of men’s mental health and wellbeing. Step Forward will take place on Wednesday 23rd September from 6.30pm to 8.30pm as part of Melksham’s Sham Jam Festival. The 5km walk will start at Melksham Assembly Hall, pass through the town and finish at King George V Playing Field for free food and a series of ‘inspiring’ talks. Participants will hear from guest speakers Andy MacKenzie, founder of Dare to Become, and Ryan Hartley, creator of Always Better Than Yesterday. Through their work and personal experiences, both speakers encourage men to embrace vulnerability, build resilience and take positive steps towards better mental health.   • Weekly events at Melksham Library A full programme of free events, crafts and activities is being held at Melksham Library throughout the summer. There is also a series of free one-off special events at the library to keep children entertained. Weekly events include board games every Monday from 2pm to 4pm; baby rhyme time on Tuesdays from 11am to 11.30am; drop-in brick creators’ club from 2pm to 4pm; toddler rhyme time from 11am to 11.30am every Thursday; colouring drop-in from 2pm to 4pm every Friday; and a brick creators’ club from 2pm to 4pm on Saturdays.   • Safety warning issued over viewing solar eclipse Wiltshire will fall into early darkness next week, during the biggest solar eclipse since 1999. The Moon will pass directly between Earth and the Sun, obscuring 90 per cent of the sun from the county.   • Carers walk 150 miles for armed forces charity A local care team has completed a 150-mile weighted walking challenge in aid of Help for Heroes, finishing the final mile at King George V Park in Melksham. Read more in the upcoming issue of Melksham News, out this week.
  • Domestic abuser who assaulted Melksham woman jailed A man who assaulted his partner, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, has been jailed for 19 months after admitting two assaults. Billy Conners, 26, formerly of Castle Road, Salisbury, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on 27th July after pleading guilty to two counts of assault. He was jailed for 19 months. A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said, “In April, we received a call from the victim, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, reporting that she had been assaulted by Conners on multiple occasions, with whom she had been in a relationship with for only two months. “On 30th March, Conners assaulted the victim by biting her and spitting on her, as well as repeatedly calling her derogatory names. Two days later, Conners accused the victim of messaging other people and pushed her to the floor. “On April 2nd, Conners assaulted the victim again, kicking her to the head after pushing her to the floor, punched her in the ribs and face and again spat in her face.   • Melksham charity launches £50,000 appeal to replace ageing bus A transport charity which has been supporting residents for 30 years has launched a £50,000 appeal to replace one of its ageing buses. Melksham Area Community Transport helps elderly residents get to the shops, children travel to school and community groups attend activities, providing accessible transport for those who struggle to use conventional public transport. The charity launched the fundraiser earlier this month after one of its buses, which is 20 years old, reached the end of its working life. With a fleet of six buses, the charity runs shopper buses taking residents to Devizes, Trowbridge and Chippenham on certain days, provides transport for schools, care homes, social clubs and community organisations, and operates daily school buses.   • Play cafe thrives in heart of Melksham An interactive play cafe in Melksham is celebrating its first six months after creating a popular space for children and parents to learn through play. Mighty Minis Play Cafe, at Avonside, features themed role-play zones including a medical centre, theatre, construction area and salon. It was created by three local mums – Sarah Hodges, Lisa Hargreaves and Ali Turrell – who saw a gap in Melksham for alternative facilities for children and parents. Since opening in December, co-director Ali said there has been a real “community feel” about the space, with new children and parents continuing to visit alongside regulars who attend every week. “Everyone has been really positive and really responsive,” said Ali. “There was clearly a need for it, which is lovely.   • Assembly Hall attracts household names to Melksham A new wave of nationally recognised acts are set to appear at Melksham Assembly Hall as the venue expands its entertainment programme while continuing to host community events. The venue has strengthened links with promoters under new manager Robert Reay-Waugh, who took over earlier this year, helping secure a programme of household names alongside community events, weddings, parties and local groups. Among the performers booked are Toyah, former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, comedian Dom Jolly, vocal quartet G4 and folk favourites The Wurzels. The venue, in the Market Place, has hosted events since opening in 1847 and has previously welcomed major acts including Status Quo and Thin Lizzy. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
