  • Parking scheme could be implemented on Union Street A residents’ parking scheme could be implemented on Union Street, following the closure of Lowbourne Car Park. Resident-only permit bays could be introduced along Union Street, following the closure of the Lowbourne Car Park, which is expected to be removed once the planned older people’s flats are constructed on the former library site. The idea was put forward by Cllr Jennie Westbrook at Melksham Town Council’s Economic Development and Planning Committee meeting on 13th January. Councillors unanimously supported the proposal and agreed to refer the possible introduction of on-street parking permits to the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group (LHFIG).   • New owners breathe fresh life into the Market Tavern Melksham’s popular Market Tavern has new owners who are keen to make the pub a true hub for the community. Experienced publican Marin Jesuthasan has taken over the town centre pub and restaurant and says he can’t wait to welcome customers old and new. The pub remains open for business, but an official re-opening celebration is planned for Saturday 7th February with free food tasting from 5pm to 10pm and with existing and new customers all welcome. Marin has an impressive background in hospitality, having previously run The Alma in Stoke Newington, Islington – a pub that scooped Time Out’s prestigious “Most Loved Pub” award in 2016. Originally from Sri Lanka, Marin came to the UK in 2001 and began working as a kitchen porter in London. Through hard work and passion, he worked his way up to head chef and later took on his local pub when the owners retired, transforming it into a cornerstone of the local community.   • Coming up at the Melksham Monday Movies Club The next films to be shown at the Melksham Monday Movies Club will be The Best of Men and Six Minutes to Midnight. On 2nd February, The Best of Men will be shown, and is based on real events. In 1943, a refugee doctor from Nazi Germany uses new methods to rehabilitate those with spinal injuries in Great Britain. The film stars Rob Brydon, George Mackay, Bebe Sanders and Leigh Quinn. On 16th February, Six Minutes to Midnight will be screened. In the UK, on 15th August 1939, 17 days before World War Two, an English teacher and his camera disappear from a coastal boarding school with 20 German teen girls. Miller gets the job six days later, secretly trying to find out what happened. The film stars Eddie Izzard, Judi Dench and Nigel Lindsay. Both films will be screened at the Assembly Hall. Doors open at 1.30pm, with the film starting at 2pm. There will be a break for tea or coffee and a chance to catch up with friends before the event finishes around 4pm.   • Melksham Without raises precept by 6.1% in new budget Melksham Without Parish Council has agreed to raise its precept, the parish council’s share of council tax, by 6.1% for the 2026/27 financial year. Parish councillors unanimously agreed to the rise at the Full Council meeting held on Monday 26th January, where they also set their budget for the year at £302,429. This means that an average Band D property will contribute £101.14 to Melksham Without Parish Council, a £5.49 (5.74%) rise on last year. This will be a rise of 11p per week for the average parish household. Clerk of Melksham Without Parish Council Teresa Strange said, “The parish council have strived to keep the cost low for residents, whilst maintaining services and investing in assets. “The parish council runs a number of facilities and services in the parish from this precept funding and supports a number of community ventures in both the parish as well as those in the town and villages outside the parish."   • Back-to-back defeats leave Town in relegation trouble Sat 17th January. Melksham Town 4-5 Shaftesbury Sat. 24th January. Didcot Town 2-0 Melksham Town Melksham Town’s poor start to 2026 has continued with two defeats, making it four defeats in a row now since the start of the New Year. The defeats leave Town just one point above the relegation zone, having played more games than the teams below them. On Saturday 17th January, Town went down to a dramatic 5-4 defeat at home to Shaftesbury. Twice Melksham went behind in the first-half but hit back immediately. First, Shaftesbury opened the scoring on 20 minutes only for Will Christopher to equalise two minutes later; then on 43 minutes, the visitors struck again, but Town equalised within a minute through Olly Mehew. Melksham took the lead straight after the break; Jamal Lawrence with his 13th of the season before Shaftesbury levelled on 49th minutes. Read more on our website.   • Public consultation on future of town’s park Residents are invited to share ideas for the future of King George V Park at a public consultation on Saturday 7th February. The consultation will take place in the park after parkrun, where Melksham Town councillors will be available to discuss ideas for the space, events residents enjoy and what they would like to see more of. “The King George V Park is our premier park in Melksham, it is a fabulous park but it is time to move things forward,” said Cllr Adrienne Westbrook. Ideas shared will help shape an updated masterplan, setting out a long-term strategy for the park. Councillors are particularly keen to discuss the sensory garden and its location, the future of the dog park and how to improve the park’s entrances. “At the moment we have two entrances but without any signs or history of why the park is called King George V Park,” said Cllr Westbrook.   • Melksham resident celebrates 100th birthday A Melksham resident has celebrated his 100th birthday this month. Ron Francis turned 100 on Wednesday 21st January and said he was ‘astonished’ to reach the milestone and receive a birthday card from King Charles III. “I was very pleased to receive this, it’s just lovely,” said Ron, who has lived in Melksham for 30 years with his wife, Janet Francis. During his 100 years, Ron fought in World War II as part of the Royal Air Force Association. He later recalled fond memories of working at Collins, the publishers in Pall Mall, where he met Agatha Christie. “She was very nice person. She never talked down to you,” said Ron. “I used to make her a cup of tea and she always insisted on giving me some money, which I didn’t need. She always insisted on paying me something for the tea.
