A charity football match and fun day in memory of Leigh Gaskin, organised by his family, friends and the local community, has raised nearly £3,000 for charity, taking the total raised past the £10,000 mark.
Matt Cooke – a close friend of Leigh who died of cancer last August – said, “We talked about doing something for Sarcoma UK at Leigh’s funeral, but we didn’t really think anything would happen, and if we did do something, it would be small.
“But then people started hearing about it and really wanted to get involved.
“Leigh would have loved today, but he would have been moaning about being stuck at left back!
“Leigh was someone that everyone knew and liked. He was so cheeky and that is how we remember him.”
Rosie Worsley, who helped organise the raffle prizes said, “The people and businesses of Melksham have been brilliant and I can’t thank them enough.
“When they heard what we were doing, they didn’t hesitate to donate. It was more than we ever expected.”
Leigh’s mother Lynn Gaskin said, “Leigh was full of fun and that is what we wanted today to be.”
The money raised from the event is for Sarcoma UK, a charity that is close to the heart of Leigh’s family and friends, as it is the only charity event that focuses on all types of sarcoma.
“We didn’t want there to be any pressure on people to spend money,” Lynn continued, “so we didn’t have a huge target. We thought maybe this could be an annual event and then we can do something in memory of Leigh every year.”
Keith Taylor, who was the manager at Melksham Park when Leigh played for the team said, “At least 17 of the old players are here today to support and to play.
“He would have been over the moon at the number of people who have turned up in support. He would have been really thrilled to see all his old teammates, especially those who have travelled from around the world to be here.”
Leigh’s father, Kevin Gaskin said, “It all turned out really well. The youngsters enjoyed playing their match and AFC Melksham’s disabled football team thoroughly enjoyed playing in front of an audience and were delighted to be given medals afterwards.
“The fun day raised an amazing amount of money, which is fast approaching £3,000, with final donations coming in. That now brings the total money raised since we started to a staggering £10,000.
“We are so grateful to everyone who helped organise Sunday’s event and to everyone that came to support. Leigh would be so happy.”
