VISITORS to this summer’s Party in the Park event may have seen an afternoon performance by the PSG choirs – and if you want to see more, they are staging their own Sunday afternoon concert next month, to raise money for the Plastic Oceans UK initiative.
PSG choirs was formed four years ago by performer Will Blake, with choirs now in Melksham, Devizes, Derry Hill and Calne. They sing a variety of pop, soul and gospel songs including hits by Bruno Mars, Jess Glynne, Adele, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Pointer Sisters, Olly Murs, Elvis Presley, Tina Turner and S Club 7. The choir’s latest song, ‘Accidentally in Love’ was a hit for Counting Crows, but is known to younger audiences as part of the sound track to Shrek 2.
The special song arrangements are compiled by Will, who is a musician performing in his own band, the Will Blake Band, both locally and in Bristol and London.
The PSG choirs’ concert for Plastic Oceans UK will take place at the Neeld Community and Arts Centre, Chippenham town centre, on Sunday 23rd September from 2.30pm (doors open at 2.00pm). Tickets are £12 (£10 concessions) from neeld.co.uk
Plastic Oceans UK is a charity focused on providing a powerful and effective platform to change the world’s attitudes towards plastic.
Will said, “PSG choirs care deeply about the effects that single-use plastics are having on our oceans and we see no better way of raising money and awareness than singing our hearts out and having a great time in the process.”
The Melksham section of PSG Choirs has been running since March 2016 and meets on Wednesday evenings from 8.00pm – 9.30pm at Melksham’s Oakfields stadium. For a monthly fee, members can attend one choir – or as many as they want – on Monday nights (Devizes), Tuesdays at Derry Hill, Wednesdays in Melksham and Thursdays in Calne, all starting at 8.00pm.
During the last week of the month, all the choirs come together for a longer session ‘the big sing’, which cements rehearsals and gives all members a chance to meet up and socialise with all the PSG family. There are no auditions to join, everyone is welcome, and there is no requirement to read music.
As well as PSG choir’s first performance at Melksham’s Party in the Park, the choir has this year taken part in the Calne Spring Sing event in April and enjoyed the choir’s annual towns tour – singing in local town centres. PSG choir has performed at three weddings and has been invited in October, to sing in the Calne Music and Arts Festival. The town has also invited the singers back in December as part of the festivities for switching on their Christmas lights.
