Melksham Guides ‘cycle to Switzerland’

LOCAL Girl Guides have cycled 772 miles this week in a bid to raise funds for a trip to Switzerland.

They have completed the challenge over three days on a static exercise bike put in the shop window of Poundstretcher.

The Guides took it in turns to do 10 minute stints on the bike before rotating. It took three full days on the bike to reach their target. The 772-mile challenge was decided as that is the exact distance to Adelboden, Switzerland, where the world centre for Girl Guides is based.

The leaders and Guides raised the £5,500 they needed to fund the trip as they collected sponsorship for the challenge and also sold cakes in store to reach their target.

The group of 15 girls, along with five adults, will now make the trip to Switzerland for a week on 26th July.

Leader for the Guides, Kathy Sage said, “It’s absolutely fantastic that the girls have completed the challenge and raised the money to go on this amazing trip. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I know everybody will have a great time.”

Girl Guide, Ruby Pickford said, “I think it is really good. I can’t wait to go after all the hard work.

“It was really tiring cycling all that time, but it is definitely worth it.”

Fellow Guide, Katie Smith said, “I agree! I think we will all have a great time. It’s good to see new places and new cultures and I’m excited.”

  • Rugby team take on triathlon challenge for women’s sport

Members of Melksham Ladies’ Rugby team are putting their fitness to the test with a triathlon challenge to support a women’s sport charity and help fund the team’s physiotherapist.

A total of 49 members have signed up for the challenge, which began in September with a group run totalling 2,031km, averaging 500km a week. The cycling stage took place throughout October, covering 2,500km between the members. In November they will complete the final stage with a 100km swim.

The team aims to raise £1,000. Half will go to Women in Sport, a charity working to address gender inequalities in sport and increase opportunities for women and girls. The other half will help fund the team’s physiotherapist, helping players stay fit and injury-free.

Charlotte Holmes, who plays second row for the team, said, “We came across Women in Sport because they work in making sure there are equal opportunities for women and girls to join in with sport and breaking down the levels of sometimes inequality or stereotypes.

  • Holt to be adorned with commemorative poppies

The village of Holt will once again be decorated with thousands of handmade poppies as this year’s Remembrance cascade returns to St Katharine’s Church.

The Holt Crafters have created a display of thousands of crocheted and knitted poppies, which have been draped from the church tower and illuminated by local lighting company Light Fantastic.

Following the success of Holt’s commemorative display last year, group member Helen Gray was contacted by surrounding areas wanting to create something similar.

“This year will see our local Wiltshire villages and towns, all close to each other, displaying poppies for Remembrance Day,” she said. “Why not do a poppy trail tour? Corsham, Atworth, Melksham, ending in Holt – or the other way round!”

  • Melksham veteran takes on 150-mile Remembrance challenge

A veteran in Melksham is running 150 miles over 11 days carrying a Royal British Legion (RBL) flag to raise funds for the charity ahead of Remembrance Day.

Stephen Crawshaw-Bowen, who served in the Army for 12 years, started the challenge on 1st November and will finish it on 11th November, Remembrance Day.

The challenge will see him complete up to 20 miles a day to raise funds for the RBL, which provides life-long support to serving and ex-service personnel and their families.

“I have got five children, so I am trying to fit it in with school hours. I also work full-time so I have to find the time to do it,” said Stephen.

  • Villagers rally to save 18th century pub

Residents in Semington are backing a campaign to reopen the 18th century Somerset Arms, which has been closed for more than two years.

Villagers have formed the Semington Pub Action Group, with the aim of the community buying the pub and leasing it to an experienced operator at an affordable rent. For the project to work, the group needs to raise an estimated £200,000 from the village.

“We think we can count on raising the funds from the village and source a fantastic amount of practical help,” said Ian Williamson from the action group.

As well as fundraising, the group will need to find other sources of funding. Ian said, “We’re in touch with a number of other pubs who have been on this journey already and we’re very grateful for the help they are giving us.

  • Remembrance Sunday breakfast buffet at The Market Tavern

A local pub is holding a Breakfast Buffet on Remembrance Sunday with all proceeds going to the Melksham Royal British Legion.

The Market Tavern in the Market Place is hosting the event on Sunday 9th November from 9am, offering bacon or egg butties, toast and jam and tea and coffee from 9am.

“We will be providing a pit stop before the Remembrance Parade,” says landlord, Rob Carter. “Bacon or egg butties are £3, toast and jam at £2 (gluten free available) and coffee, tea or squash is £1.

“100% of the proceeds will go directly into the Poppy Appeal and Melksham Royal British Legion. It’s a cause very close to our hearts. Last year we had a fantastic turnout and are hoping for similar support this year. We look forward to seeing you and having a cuppa or sarnie while doing a bit of good!”

  • Dementia charity marks 35th anniversary with new name

A Dementia charity supporting people across Wiltshire, including Melksham residents, is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a new name and new look.

Wiltshire-based Alzheimer’s Support, which provides advice, support and care to people living with dementia and their family carers, is now known as Beyond Dementia.

Beyond Dementia employs around 130 people in Wiltshire and has more than 200 volunteers. It supports around 2,500 people each year, offering one-to-one companionship at home, national award-winning day clubs, dementia advisers and a growing range of community groups and activities, from dementia choirs to memory cafés.

Melksham residents use the charity’s day club in Trowbridge, which offers a range of activities designed to support wellbeing, encourage friendships and build confidence. Beyond Dementia also provides home support and advice services locally.

  • Melksham Guide groups continue fundraising to save hut

Melksham’s Girlguiding groups are continuing their hard work to raise £25,000 for vital roof repairs to the Guide Hut, or risk losing their long-standing home.

The campaign launched earlier this year when the group learned that the hut, near King George V Park, is facing serious issues due to a leaking roof.

So far, the girls have raised over £3,400 through a series of community fundraising events, including Chocolate Bingo, a stall at Bowerhill School Fete, and a chocolate auction.

“The girls are loving the fundraising campaign and they do enjoy helping out and getting involved,” said Brownie leader Helen Short. “Through doing this, they are learning about money and community and how to put events on for the community. A lot of new badges have recently been released as well, so they have a lot of new skills they can learn.”

  • Remembrance service for road traffic victims

The Melksham family of the late Michelle Phillips, who was tragically killed in a road traffic collision in Devon at the age of 26, are inviting people to join them at a special remembrance service for road traffic victims next month.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims service, organised by national charity RoadPeace, will be held on Sunday 16th November at 11am at The Guildhall, High Street, Bath BA1 5AW.

This ceremony acknowledges all lives lost and broken on the road in the South West. It is also an opportunity to thank the emergency services and medical professionals who deal with the traumatic aftermath of road death and injury.

During the service, photos of those being remembered will be displayed, and their names will be read out. If you would like to remember a loved one in this way, you can submit names and photographs to Group Coordinator Kate Uzzell at Kate.Uzzell@roadpeace.org or info@roadpeace.org
