ANDY York has compiled a disc full of ‘Melksham Memories’ that show photos of Melksham from as far back as the late 1800s. 

He has started with a set of pictures from the floods and will be adding others to make up a collection of different categories.

The discs will be on sale with a percentage of the proceeds being used to  support the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

  • Successful fete raises valuable funds for school A school fete brought together families and residents earlier this month for fun activities and refreshments, raising funds for Forest and Sandridge Primary School. Held on Saturday 13th September at the school, the event was organised by the Parent Teacher Association, Forest Friends, and featured children’s games, fairground rides, glitter tattoos, a braid bar, a Stitch meet-and-greet, a tombola, and refreshments from local vendors including Roc and Floss Coffee and Evie’s Mac and Cheese. Deputy headteacher James Mead said, “We are incredibly grateful to all the parents, the local community and especially our amazing PTA, Forest Friends, for their hard work in organising and running the event. Their support and generosity helped raise valuable funds that will go directly towards enhancing the school experience for our children at Forest.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.
  • Former mayor to contest Melksham South by-election A forner mayor will go head-to-head with a previous Wiltshire Council election candidate in the upcoming Melksham South town council by-election. The election follows the resignation of Jon Hubbard in July, who had served on the council for 17 years. The vote is scheduled to take place on Thursday 9th October. Tom Price, representing the Local Conservatives, served as the council’s mayor last year and was a town councillor for four years before choosing not to stand for re-election. Challenging him is Jon Leach of Reform UK, who unsuccessfully stood for election to Wiltshire Council in May. Both parties are regarded as right of centre, meaning residents will not have a choice of candidates from other parts of the political spectrum in this election.   • RAF Melksham display at the town hall museum This month’s display at Melksham’s ‘pop-up’ museum in the town hall commemorates the 85th anniversary of RAF Melksham. The display has been installed by Melksham District and Historical Association, which is encouraging people to pop in and learn more about Melksham’s air force heritage. RAF Melksham was a Royal Air Force station which operated as a non-flying training base. It was established in 1940 and closed in 1965. It also trained personnel from other Allied Air Forces and the Royal Naval Air Service. After its closure, the site was developed into the Bowerhill Industrial Estate and residential area.   • Family of late Melksham woman fight for justice over police ‘failings’ The family of popular Melksham woman Gail Chilcott, who died last year in a three-car collision, say they are fighting for justice after what they describe as failings by Wiltshire Police in handling the investigation. Gail, who was a magistrate, fostered around 60 children with her husband, Maurice, and was known in the town for her childminding work and involvement in many community groups and activities. She was involved in a collision on the A3102 near Calne last February and died on 26th March 2024 from her injuries. Wiltshire Police launched an investigation into the collision, but for months the family received little information. They recently learned from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) that the case had been archived because the police had not provided the necessary information.   • Sextortion awareness campaign launched in Melksham A new campaign to raise awareness of ‘sextortion’ – online sexual extortion – has been launched in Melksham. It’s run by Crimestoppers, the independent charity, and its youth service Fearless, and has been made possible thanks to funding from Melksham Without Parish Council. Sextortion – also known as online sexual extortion – is a cruel form of blackmail where victims are threatened with the release of intimate images unless they pay money or meet demands. These images may be real or fake, often obtained through social media, dating apps or other online platforms. Victims can be targeted by strangers, fake romantic interests or organised criminal gangs. Cases are rising nationally, and Melksham is not immune. “Sextortion can happen to anyone,” said Crimestoppers. “Victims often feel scared or ashamed. It’s important to remember don’t panic, don’t pay, and don’t stay silent. Help is available, and speaking up can protect others." Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.
  • Gruffalo stars to open Whitehall’s magical Christmas Shop Families are in for a festive treat this weekend as Whitehall Garden Centre gets ready to open its hugely popular Christmas Shop – and this year, some very special guests will be joining the celebrations. Beloved children’s characters The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child will be at Whitehall’s Lacock centre during the opening weekend on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September, delighting visitors young and old. The characters will be making special appearances throughout the weekend, with meet-and-greet sessions on both days at: 11am to 11.40am, 12pm to 12.40pm, 1pm to 1.40pm, 2pm to 2.40pm and 3pm to 3.30pm They’ll also be roaming the centre at intervals, giving families plenty of opportunities for photos and festive fun.   • Melksham Makers’ Market returns this weekend The Melksham Makers’ Market will return to the Market Place on Saturday 27th September, running from 9am to 2pm, bringing together a vibrant mix of local artists, crafters, bakers and small businesses. Organised by local makers Sarah Hillman, Catherine Carpenter and Nicola Coleman, and hosted by Melksham Town Council, the market has become a much-loved date in the town calendar, giving small businesses from Melksham and across Wiltshire the chance to showcase their work. This month’s line-up includes many Melksham favourites: Roc & Floss Coffee, Sandridge Brownies and Bakes, The Holistic Mummy, Florrie & Jean, Amanda Humphrey Ceramics and Happy Hounds Bakery.   • Antiques TV star to host community valuation day for air ambulance charity Antiques TV star Paul Martin is hosting a valuation community event at the Bath and Wiltshire Air Ambulance base in Semington this Saturday to raise vital funds for the charity. Paul, who is famed for presenting BBC’s FlogIt!, is a charity ambassador for the Bath and Wiltshire Air Ambulance.   • Macmillan Coffee morning in the park this Saturday Melksham parkrun is hosting a Macmillan Coffee morning on Saturday 27th September at the Adventure Centre in the King George V Park. The coffee morning will run from 9.15am to 11.15am, helping to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, which provides health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer. Encouraging people to come along, local resident Terri Welch said, “If you stand on the balcony of the Adventure Centre, you can watch the park runners one way and the canoeists towards the river.
