BUDDING journalists at Melksham Oak Community School were given a helping hand this month by Melksham News reporter, Ben Fenlon.
The school’s journalism club, which was formed last year, quizzed the reporter about his life, how he got into journalism and his favourite local news stories.
“It was very exciting meeting Ben because I had never met a journalist before!” said Alfie Farmer, 11.
After the question and answer session, Ben helped the students develop their own ideas for articles in a workshop session, which taught them how to find and write stories for news outlets.
Kacey Cleverley, 12, said, “Ben helped my group to think of different ideas for our writing – we had been struggling but now we’re really pleased with our ideas.”
“All the journalism club are really excited about our writing,” said Ash Webb, 11.
Principal Alan Henderson said, “The students loved Ben’s visit. We want to provide enriching experiences to bring their learning to life. They are showing huge enthusiasm and talent.”
The up and coming young journalists, some of whom have already had their stories printed in the Melksham News, are now searching for their next ‘scoop’, which will be shared on the school’s website, and occasionally in the Melksham News.
