MELKSHAM is now part of a Wiltshire time credit scheme that rewards people who volunteer in the community.
The scheme which has already been piloted in Chippenham, Calne and Salisbury, involves a time credit voucher being awarded for every hour volunteered at a designated place in the community, which can then be spent on selected activities across Wiltshire.
The scheme has been successful elsewhere in the county where people can volunteer in places such as children’s centres, primary schools, credit unions and many other places. For every hour worked in any of the places signed up on the scheme, one time credit voucher is given. These can then be spent on leisure activities and entertainment at designated places across the county. So far, entry to places such as Chippenham Town FC, Bowood and LaserQuest are part of the scheme, as well as gym and swimming time. It is hoped that the scheme can help encourage people to volunteer and also help solve any community issues in a town. This could include a litter pick earning time credits or helping out at community events which need volunteers.
The idea was explored in the summer and Melksham Town Council has now joined. They are participating in the scheme by awarding Time Credits to people who sign up to the scheme and join in litter picking initiatives around the town. Time Credits can then be exchanged for cinema tickets at Melksham Assembly Hall and for entry to the Bonfire Night at Forest Community Centre on 5th November (limited numbers only).
