STUDENTS at Melksham Oak Community School in years 12 and 13 kickstarted their art AS and A2 courses through a life drawing workshop.
Taught by local renowned artist Charles Rodwell, the life drawing sessions have been an annual opportunity for the sixth form and have gone from strength to strength. Students spend the day drawing a model in a variety of poses and are taught a variety of skills and techniques to develop their coursework. Works are produced in a range of media and address form, proportions, tone, texture and detail.
Art teacher at Melksham Oak school, Martina Batchelor said, “After seeing the stunning outcome from the life drawing class that was on Tuesday, I must say I was taken aback by what our students are able to produce. It is incredible to see how talent comes out through guidance and workshops. I think it’s great to be exposed to the human body and help remove the embarrassment of something we all have. I think it is a wonderful display of the talent, creative vision and prospective future of our students. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to raise to the challenge and receive the praise they deserve.”
Pupils seemed to enjoy the experience. Year 12 pupil Cara Wallace said, “The life drawing class was really interesting. I thought it would be embarrassing but it actually wasn’t and everyone’s observation art work was really good!” The drawings will be available to buy at future school events. The school also hopes to run life drawing opportunities for the community in the future but will be unable to run and sustain classes if there is insufficient attendance.
