OWNERS of electric vehicles wanting to charge their vehicle in the town centre will have a long wait, as there are no plans to replace the damaged charging point in King Street car park until 2022.
The public rapid charging point in the Wiltshire Council owned car park – which can accommodate two vehicles – have been out of action for several months – the nearest alternatives are in car parks owned by Wiltshire Council in Chippenham, Corsham, Westbury and Trowbridge.
Wiltshire Council has told Melksham News that they ‘plan’ to replace the King Street charging points as part of their vision to replace all existing charging points in the county in 2022. There are also plans to increase the number of available chargers.
In addition to replacing the King Street chargers, two new charging points are earmarked for the Melksham campus.
Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for transport, cllr Dr Mark McClelland, said, “We are aware that the electric charging point in King Street car park has been damaged and isn’t working. We apologies for any inconvenience this is causing to residents.
“We are currently tendering for a provider to replace all of our existing car park electric vehicle charging points, including those in King Street car park in Melksham. Dependent on supply and contractor availability, we plan to replace all charging points in 2022 and partner with parish and town councils to expand provision.
“Wiltshire Council has just adopted a new Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Plan, which seeks to work with our local communities to provide additional Electric Vehicle Chargers.”
