FOLLOWING the Probus Club Lunch held at The Kings Arms Hotel on 4th February, our members were pleased to welcome Mr David Head as our Speaker.
David Head spent 36 years in the RAF, part of which time he spent working on Vulcan bombers. Following his retirement from the RAF he was employed by the Home Office as the County of Berkshire co-ordinator with main responsibility for Windsor Castle. Mr Head’s presentation was about the 1992 fire at the castle and the evacuation of people and priceless artefacts for which he was responsible.
The cause of the fire was found to have been curtains catching fire from a workman’s lamp left on during a lunch break. The fire quickly took hold of the rubbish accumulated from over the centuries between the wood panelling and the walls. The fire took nine hours to contain and bring under control, causing 13million pounds of damage. The vote of thanks was given by John Holness.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 4th March.
