DESPITE a slightly disappointing turnout, the Rotary Club of Melksham enjoyed an excellent evening in the Art House Café for a wine tasting session in support of Water Survival Boxes.
These boxes are sent all over the world when disasters strike and are one of Rotary’s most impressive and continuing achievements.
The evening was excellently conducted by John Whittaker, a wine specialist at the Waitrose branch in the town. It quickly became clear that John knows his wines, is full of enthusiasm and conveys his knowledge in an attractive, informative but relaxed manner. His choice of wines was more unusual, a zingy Prosecco to tickle the palate, then a Chilean wine, followed by two Merlots, a Rumanian and a Uruguayan, all before supper.
An appetising range of cheeses was served by Sarah Hiscocks, a recent newcomer to the club, and Sarah Stead, wife of the community service chairman Bob Stead, who organised the evening.
John’s final wine, “a seriously sweet wine”, was served at supper, with his recommendation that it was a first rate accompaniment to the blue cheese on offer but equally could go really well with chocolate!
The Rotary Club are extremely grateful to John for his time and to Waitrose for their generosity in supplying all the wines, thus contributing so much to the enjoyment of the evening whilst helping the club to support such a worthy cause as Water Survival Boxes.
