EXCITING plans to grow Melksham Shed have been giving the go- ahead, thanks to a number of grants awarded to the group.
The Shed Melksham was set up in 2014 and since then, has continued to grow; but now the group has outgrown its Portakabin and will be moving into a larger building soon.
Chris Pickett who started the club said, “We’re in the process of buying two containers, much bigger than we have now, to put alongside the Forest Community Centre.
“The space we have now is fine if there’s just a few of us there, but if all the members come along it’s too cramped and we can’t do anything. We also have a waiting list of people who would like to join but at the moment there’s no room. The new building will be big enough to have an area for work benches as well as a separate social area for those who want to come along to just have a chat and a cup. There will also be access for wheelchairs.
“We’re delighted with the grants we’ve been given by the Melksham Area Board, The Lottery Fund, Community First, Rotary and the Lions. Also to those in the community who have held coffee mornings to help boost our total. We needed to raise £16,000 and to date we’ve got just over £17,000 in the bank.
“As soon as it dries up a bit, we can start putting up the containers. We hope to be up and running by the spring.
“The purpose of the group is to provide an environment for people who are like-minded to meet up, have a chat over a cup of coffee and socialise. We have no committee and it’s run entirely by the members.”
