There were more visitors than members at the September meeting of the Melksham & District Historical Association.
The group reports, “When we show slides from our collection, the Melksham people always give us tremendous support.
“The evening was in two halves. During the first, Peter Maslen presented a collection of slides put together by John Holness. It was his tribute presentation to our Market Place, to honour the 800 years since the Market Charter was granted. The pictures were in groupings of early artist’s impressions, markets, fairs, events etc through the years and made a very interesting sequence.
“During the second half, Cathy Berry read from the late Peter Brown’s memories of growing up in Melksham in the 1920s and 1930s, then illustrated these memories with slides from the collection, when possible.
“Peter recorded a lot about Melksham’s social history and his personal memories. This was just a taster of some of his work. Hopefully the association will be able to illustrate more in the future.
“We would like to record our thanks to the visitor who so willingly set to and put out more chairs as folk streamed in, as Assembly Hall staff and speakers were struggling with the technology! Thank you sir.
“Our next meeting is on Thursday 17th October, Melksham Assembly Hall, 7.30pm, and the speaker will be Nick McCamley on “A History of Avoncliff”.
