Melksham to lead the way with ‘age-friendly’ vision

A GROUP of local people, led by seniors, aims to make Melksham one of the first small towns in the world to achieve “age friendly” status – with people of all ages reaping the benefits.

New chair of the Melksham Age Friendly Project, Tony Watts OBE, has set out the journey on which the town is set to embark.

“Recently, some researchers had the bright idea of designing and then donning special clothing, gloves and glasses to simulate how many people in their 70s feel when tackling everyday tasks.

“With their new perspective, researchers could now see how challenging it can be to navigate a crowded pavement with broken paving stones, climb stairs, cross a busy road… and so on.

“No, not every older person has poor eyesight, arthritic fingers or dodgy knees… but enough do, and to such an extent, that they can feel excluded from the activities most of us take for granted.

“Added to this, even the prospect of a trip to the shops, let alone a day out, can be daunting for those who require the reassurance of a toilet close by, or need regular sit downs. Poor housing design can make it impossible or too expensive to adapt one’s home – leading to falls and forcing people into care. Poor town planning and transport links can result in older people not being able to socialise or even shop.

“All too often, the end result is social exclusion and increasing dependence. And, of course, when you start going out or doing less, the harder it becomes to do them again.

What’s the answer?

“Is there a solution? Well apart from an anti-ageing elixir, still to be patented, the best approach is good design and thoughtful planning, summed up in the principles of “age friendly communities”.

“It leads to fewer falls, greater wellbeing, lower health and care costs and less isolation. Critically, it allows everyone in a community to be a full participant – contributing their skills, energy and wisdom.

“Yes, there are some upfront costs involved – but nowhere near as much as the sums saved by public services. Shops and businesses benefit too; communities become more integrated and harmonious. Moreover, there are various “pots” of money available to drive the agenda forward.

“Another plus point is that it’s not just older people who benefit; mums with young children need seats in shopping centres and decent public toilets too. A teenager in a wheelchair needs easy access onto a bus just as much as a pensioner. That’s why the expression “all-age friendly” is often used to describe what’s going on. Critically, it will need people from all generations working together to make this happen.

So how does Melksham fit into this?

“There’s lots going in this arena internationally, promoted by the World Health Organisation who recognise the benefits to a community’s overall wellbeing. Manchester is the UK’s best example at present, with Bristol working hard on the principles too.

“Whereas the original focus was on cities, it is now filtering down. Melksham is now looking to become a template for smaller communities nationally.

“A gathering in August, led by the Melksham & District 55+ Forum, saw 100 people pack into the Town Hall to listen to speakers explaining what was involved, leading to unanimous support for the concept. The gathering included representatives from all the relevant local authorities that will need to be on board to make this happen. A smaller working group assembled late in September to agree the next steps.

What next?

“An age friendly community is one where ALL older people:

1. have opportunities to enjoy life and feel well;

2. participate in society and feel valued for their contribution;

3. have enough money to live well;

4. feel safe, comfortable and secure in their home;

5. have access to quality health and care.

“That’s a big agenda and Rome wasn’t built in a day, but experience shows that improvements are best achieved in steps. One quick “win” already identified is to audit existing community assets – groups, organisations and local resources – that can act as a platform for the future.  Then we need to ensure that everyone locally knows what support is already out there for those who may feel isolated, or struggling financially, to make the most of their lives.

“Following that, a series of smaller sub-groups will be formed, covering themes such as transport, housing, the outdoor environment, health & wellbeing, shops, employment and intergenerational working.

“When we have identified what is currently working well – and what can be improved – the town can apply to the appropriate organisations to fund changes… but significant change can also be brought about by small shifts in attitude and priorities.

“Over the coming weeks and months we’ll keep you updated on progress – and tell you how you can become involved. Age should never be a barrier to someone playing a full and fulfilling role in their community. An “all-age friendly” Melksham will achieve that vision for all of its citizens.”

  • Domestic abuser who assaulted Melksham woman jailed

A man who assaulted his partner, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, has been jailed for 19 months after admitting two assaults. Billy Conners, 26, formerly of Castle Road, Salisbury, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on 27th July after pleading guilty to two counts of assault.

He was jailed for 19 months.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said, “In April, we received a call from the victim, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, reporting that she had been assaulted by Conners on multiple occasions, with whom she had been in a relationship with for only two months.

“On 30th March, Conners assaulted the victim by biting her and spitting on her, as well as repeatedly calling her derogatory names. Two days later, Conners accused the victim of messaging other people and pushed her to the floor.

“On April 2nd, Conners assaulted the victim again, kicking her to the head after pushing her to the floor, punched her in the ribs and face and again spat in her face.

  • Melksham charity launches £50,000 appeal to replace ageing bus

A transport charity which has been supporting residents for 30 years has launched a £50,000 appeal to replace one of its ageing buses.

Melksham Area Community Transport helps elderly residents get to the shops, children travel to school and community groups attend activities, providing accessible transport for those who struggle to use conventional public transport.

The charity launched the fundraiser earlier this month after one of its buses, which is 20 years old, reached the end of its working life.

With a fleet of six buses, the charity runs shopper buses taking residents to Devizes, Trowbridge and Chippenham on certain days, provides transport for schools, care homes, social clubs and community organisations, and operates daily school buses.

  • Play cafe thrives in heart of Melksham

An interactive play cafe in Melksham is celebrating its first six months after creating a popular space for children and parents to learn through play.

Mighty Minis Play Cafe, at Avonside, features themed role-play zones including a medical centre, theatre, construction area and salon.

It was created by three local mums – Sarah Hodges, Lisa Hargreaves and Ali Turrell – who saw a gap in Melksham for alternative facilities for children and parents.

Since opening in December, co-director Ali said there has been a real “community feel” about the space, with new children and parents continuing to visit alongside regulars who attend every week.

“Everyone has been really positive and really responsive,” said Ali. “There was clearly a need for it, which is lovely. It was something that we wanted to do for a long time.”

  • Assembly Hall attracts household names to Melksham

A new wave of nationally recognised acts are set to appear at Melksham Assembly Hall as the venue expands its entertainment programme while continuing to host community events.

The venue has strengthened links with promoters under new manager Robert Reay-Waugh, who took over earlier this year, helping secure a programme of household names alongside community events, weddings, parties and local groups.

Among the performers booked are Toyah, former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, comedian Dom Jolly, vocal quartet G4 and folk favourites The Wurzels.

The venue, in the Market Place, has hosted events since opening in 1847 and has previously welcomed major acts including Status Quo and Thin Lizzy.

  • Booking system to launch at Melksham recycling centre

Visitors to the Household Recycling Centre in Bowerhill will need to book appointments from September as part of a pilot scheme being introduced by Wiltshire Council.

The system is being piloted at six HRCs in Wiltshire to help reduce queuing, improve the customer experience and minimise disruption for nearby communities and businesses.

Residents will be able to make bookings from 8th September with visits by appointment only beginning on 14th September. Residents will initially be able to book a 30-minute slot up to one week in advance, with some same-day appointments available.

Wiltshire Council says the length of slots will be regularly reviewed to ensure there is maximum capacity available at sites.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said, “The new system is designed to make visits more convenient by helping to manage demand and reduce waiting times, particularly during busy periods.

  • Fundraising rugby quiz night for women’s team

A rugby-themed quiz night is being held at Melksham Rugby Club on Friday 14th August.

Hosted by Melksham’s women’s rugby team, the quiz starts at 7.30pm. Teams of two to four people can enter for £20.

Organisers say, “Think you know rugby? Or are you just really good at pretending you do after two pints? Perfect. Bring your ‘experts’, your guessers and your mate who once watched a Six Nations game and now thinks they’re a rugby genius. Scan the QR code, grab your squad, and come help us ‘Fill the Coach.’”

The event is part of a fundraising campaign to support the women’s team ahead of next season. There will also be a half-time raffle.

  • Wiltshire declared in drought as dry weather continues

Wiltshire has been declared as being in drought after weeks of hot, dry weather have left rivers, reservoirs and groundwater levels under pressure.

The county is among the areas covered by the Environment Agency’s Wessex drought area, which also includes Dorset, Somerset and south Gloucestershire.

The declaration comes after July saw just 7% of expected rainfall across England, falling to 1% across southern England.

  • Mum’s running challenge boosts 3G pitch fundraiser

A local mum has completed a 150km running challenge, raising more than £600 towards Melksham Town Football Club’s campaign for a new 3G pitch.

Dominika Paget ran 10km every other day throughout July, often in temperatures of up to 32C, to support the club’s efforts to purchase and install the pitch.

Her son, Harry, plays for the under-10s Typhoons. Dominika said poor winter conditions mean the team is often unable to play, highlighting the need for a dedicated 3G pitch.

She said, “At the moment Melksham Town are using the 3G pitch at Melksham Oak School but it is flooded all the time. Our children don’t play throughout the winter. You might get some spots in Chippenham or Devizes but it costs money to hire those as well. It just makes sense for Melksham Town to have one so we don’t have to go anywhere else.”
