OVER 40 local community, groups, projects and events have been awarded a grant from Melksham Town Council which totals £33,500.
The grants were awarded at a recent awards ceremony held at the Assembly Hall where representatives from those receiving the grants were handed cheques by the Mayor, cllr Terri Welch.
Some of the groups that received the bigger grants were Melksham Christmas Lights Group (£6,000), Wiltshire Citizens Advice (£5,500), Melksham Tourist Information (£4,000), Party in the Park (£2,000) and Melksham Carnival (£2,000).
Others that received grants included Avon Bowls Club (Melksham House), AFC Melksham, Melksham & District Senior 55+ Forum, Melksham Comic-Con, Melksham Rugby Football Club, Melksham PHAB Club and many more.
Mayor Terri Welch said, “The town council was delighted to be able to support so many valuable services in our town, for the people of Melksham. We are all suffering from the economic situation, finding it harder to make ends meet, this goes also for the voluntary sector. This sector does a stalwart job in entertaining, supporting and providing services for Melksham, and in giving these grants, the town council acknowledges the hard work done by people.
“It would have been good to have been able to give out more money, but the council also has a budget and gives out the maximum allowed by law.
“The groups receiving the grants give so much to our town, it is a delight to acknowledge them.”
