Melksham Town Council agreed its budget at Monday’s full council meeting and have set a precept of £844,910.
This represents an increase of £12.34 per year on a Band D household, or £1.02 per month.
The budget and precept was thoroughly debated by all members. The council meeting was the culmination of a series of budget meetings which began in September 2018. Indeed, the first draft budget was presented to full council on 3rd December.
The town council has made a commitment to the community to improve facilities and services, as well as safeguarding services which Wiltshire Council can no longer run. The council says “As many residents are aware, principal authorities such as Wiltshire have suffered significant cuts to their level of Government funding. With the planned improvements to King George V playing field, the re-opening and running of public toilets, the maintenance and running of parks, open spaces and recreational facilities as well as existing services, a small increase was unavoidable.
“It is also worth mentioning that the town council funding is only a very small proportion of the total amount you pay in council tax, in fact its less than 8% of your total Council Tax bill. Wiltshire Council, the fire service and the police receive the rest of your council tax.”
