MELKSHAM Town Football Club have joined forces with local primary schools to get more girls playing football.
Melksham Town FC girls’ football coach, Rob Bridges, and Melksham Town Ladies player, Hannah Sheppard, were at Bowerhill Primary School last week to introduce some basic skills to girls from years four, five and six.
Rob Bridges said, “It’s great to be able to get out in the community and hopefully get more girls interested in football. This sort of thing highlights what we do as a club and why we have the Charter Standard Community Award.
“The girls here at Bowerhill have been really enthusiastic and we have had over 30 girls volunteer to take part in this training session, which is fantastic. The ultimate aim is to get them hooked and then part of Melksham Town girls teams but if not, hopefully they can enjoy the day and it will be a useful experience for them.”
Melksham Ladies player Hannah Sheppard also assisted in the training day. She said, “The girls have been amazing and they all seem to be really enjoying themselves. I know from experience that many girls think that football is for boys, but today they have given it a go and they are enjoying it. I didn’t start playing until I was in year six, so the earlier we can get them involved the better.”
Melksham Town FC currently have girls’ teams at under 12s, 13s, 15s, 16s and a ladies team. Anyone interested in playing should contact info@melk shamunited.cm
