Melksham’s Royal Charter Weekend was launched on Saturday 25th May in the Market Place, with celebrations taking place in September to mark 800 years of Melksham being granted a charter to hold a market.
The committee members were dressed up in costume and talked to visitors to the Market about the September weekend celebrations.
An exciting weekend is planned, starting in the Market Place on Friday 27th September, with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
An exhibition from local schools and the Melksham Remembers group, will also be held in Melksham Town Hall.
Saturday 28th September sees the Town Criers’ competition where 20 Town Criers from around the country will descend on Melksham, competing for cups and glory. This colourful event will be interspersed with local folk dancing groups and Holt Morris Men. The free event will be held outside in the Market Place and everyone is invited to come along and watch.
The evening heralds a traditional medieval banquet. Organisers say, “Come and enjoy 24 dishes served over three-courses. Entertainment from the court jesters will await you, along with mead, wine and fun. This is the only paid-for event during the weekend. Tickets, available from the Assembly Hall website, are strictly limited, so book early to avoid disappointment!
“On Sunday 29th September, be transported back 800 years. Come to King George V Playing Fields where the Plantagenet Society will entertain you with their tournament. There will also be archery, squire training and travelling musicians. All there to for you to enjoy – a free to attend event.
“If you wish to help at the weekend or be involved, please contact Debbie Bentley at the Town Hall 01225 704187.”
