TOWN councillor Tom Price has been named as Melksham’s new mayor, after being voted in by fellow councillors at the full town council meeting on Monday 20th May.
Cllr Price, who was the deputy mayor, has taken over from cllr Simon Crundell. Cllr Saffi Rabey is Melksham’s new deputy mayor.
In his acceptance speech, cllr Price said he was ‘proud’ to have been chosen as mayor of Melksham and emphasised the importance of working together to make Melksham ‘the best it can be.’
He said, “It is with great humility and a profound sense of responsibility that I accept the role of mayor of Melksham. I am very proud to have been chosen by my peers to be in this position for the next and final year of this council. Your trust, support, and belief in me are the foundations upon which I stand here today. Melksham is a town rich in history, culture, and of course community spirit. And now, it is my great honour to serve you as your mayor.
“This last year has been an interesting introduction into what it takes to be mayor and I would like to thank the previous mayor, cllr Crundell for his support, advice and guidance over the last year. He has shown great leadership, commitment and unwavering devotion to this town and the title of mayor.
“As we look to the future, I am filled with hope and excitement. But I am also mindful of the challenges that lie ahead. As with any council year, this one has been a turbulent one. Primarily there have been major changes in both council staff and councillors which has caused unexpected disruption and difficulties. I can now see a positive way through this though….together.
“Only together we can navigate this council through the next year. Only together we can build the council up to enable us to deliver for the town and its people. Only together we can promote unity and progress for Melksham.
“Thank you once again for this incredible honour. Let us move forward with determination, with hope, and with the shared commitment to make Melksham the best it can be.”
New deputy mayor, cllr Saffi Rabey said, “Becoming deputy mayor is such an incredible honour. I am looking forward to working with my mayoral colleague, cllr Price, and my other council colleagues to take Melksham Town Council forward.”
